GALLOWAY CUP McLEOD AND MISS MELVIN WINNERS. D. S. McLeod, of Gore, gained a popular victory in the men’s Galloway Cup competition which was played on the Georgetowli Club’s courts on Saturday. Miss Melvin retained the ladies’ cup, her win being equally popular and meritorious. McLeod defeated the holder, A. J. Deaker, in the first round 6—4, 2—6, 6—2 and beat G. Lindsay in straight sets in the final. Lindsay created a surprise in the first round by eliminating Sumpter 4—6, 6—l, 6 —3. The match between McLeod and Deaker ivas marked by many splendid driving duels. McLeod was a little more accurate and forceful on his forehand than Deaker while his backhand was very reliable. Deaker may have played better games, but he was by no means off, which makes the Gore man’s win an outstanding performance in his career. Sumpter showed that, while he has not lost the art of volleying he has forgotten how to play his ground strokes. Lindsay, however, was in excellent form and though he had a great deal of running about to do he was full of life right till the finish of his match. In the final, however, his earlier effort told, his drive having lost its sting. McLeod, however, was in winning vein, many of his- forehand “wallops” being outright winners. No finer sportsman than McLeod exists in the province and no victory could be more popular. Miss Melvin is unquestionably the outstanding lady player in Southland. In the first round she beat Miss Tapley 9—4 and in the final she beat Miss Wade 6—l, 6 —o. Miss Tapley was down o—60 —6 before she got going. Her play was thereafter impressive, but she left her run too late. Miss Wade eliminated Miss Mahoney in the first round. Both hit out freely, Miss Wade being often brilliant. In the final, however, Miss Melvin did not allow her to gxploit her favourite shots, the issue never being in doubt. Miss Mahoney played instead of Miss Guest who elected not to take part.
