GORE SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. REVIEW OF WORK. The Gore School Committee held its usual monthly meeting on Thursday evening, Mr D. A. Dunn presiding, and there being also present Messrs H. R. Robertson (secretary), H. C. Mac Gibbon, J. P. Wylie, R. T. Weir, J. Harper, Dr. J. J. Gresham and Mr L. McKenzie (headmaster). The headmaster’s report covered the period from the reopening of the school early in February, at which date the roll number was 431—five more than at the corresponding period of 1931. The staff recorded its appreciation of the work during last year of Misses F. Allen and D. Ferguson (probationary assistants), C. Allen, L. Purvis and Wilkinson, who now had severed their connection with the school, the three last-named having been admitted as students at the Dunedin Training College. Two probationers passed the full examination for training college entrance and one in all subjects but one. Captain Wallis and members of the Gore Fire Brigade periodically tested the pupils in fire drill and had expressed pleasure at the children’s efficiency. Mr Irvine had been unremitting in his attention to the school premises, and their condition reflected credit on his zealous care. The plots cultivated by pupils under the auspices of the Agricultural Clubs were four of potatoes, 12 of carrots and one each of chou mollier and mangolds. These plots had been judged by Mr Faithful, and the crops would be weighed shortly. The school roll for the period ending March 17 numbered 441, and the highest attendance was 423. Seedlings received from Mr R. W. Hamilton and Messrs Burrows Bros, bloomed well in the school garden and borders, making an excellent display. The report was received, and it was resolved to purchase a number of class examination registers needed by the staff, also to see to several deficient door fasteners throughout the building.
