SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Otautau Racing Club’s Annual fixture will be held to day, with the first race at 1 p.iu. Wellington Racing Club’s Autumn meeting will bo concluded at Trentham track this afternoon. A number of Maorilanders will race at the Bridge Opening meeting at Randwick course to-day. Phar Lap is to make his first appearance in public on American soil in Mexico tomorrow. It is officially announced that Red Sea is held under lease by the local trainer, F. W. Ellis. North Island Challenge Stakes, for all ages, w.f.a., with penalties (7f.) will bo decided to day. The totalisator returns at Waimate R.C. meeting on Thursday displayed a decrease of over £3OOB. Thompson Handicap winner, Gay Crest, easily ranks as the best handicap performer in Maoriland. The Southland cross-country season opens with the Otautau Steeplechase Handicap (24m.) to-day. Reremoana won his second Thompson Handicap (Im.) in 1927 under the welter weight of 9.8, in 1.37 J. Gay Crest’s Thompson Handicap success under 9.8 in 1.371 was notable under misty rain conditions. Pavilion (7.10) holds the Australasian one mile record of 1.36, accomplished at Randwick (Syd.) in 1930. The totalisator returns on the opening day of the Wellington R.C. meeting were down by nearly £14,000. The Crown Stakes, for non-totalisator meeting winners (Gf.) should be interesting at Otautau races to-day. With the weather apparently settled, Enwood and Thornton will probably compete at Otautau meeting to-day. Ex-Southlander, F. T. Hogan, has two novices engaged at the Otautau and Riverton R.C.’s current meetings. Off the scene for 'some time, Ringing Cheer may race well at Westport to-day and again on Monday next. Ridden by an unknown 6.7 apprentice (F. F.glil, allowed 71b, Chide (9.1) easily won Rosehill Handicap (Im. 3f.). The connections of Chide secured a nice price and big money when the Maorilander won stoutly at Rosehill track. Three coupled brethren ’chasers and two brother jockeys will be unique in the Otautau Steeplechase contest to-day. Second on Thursday piloting Cricket Bat, A. E. Ellis won this event last season on the Taranaki Silvermine. The promise of fine weather at Otautau to-day means better fields than would otherwise have been the case. Backed and beaten at Trentham on Thursdav. Merry Peel (Hunting SongMerry Roe) 4yrs, is trained by E. J. Ellis. Riccarton-trained hack, The Quorn, who ran fourth at Trentham on Thursday, may do better to-day under 9.0. Several promising light harness novices will be strapped in the Otautau Racing Club’s events this afternoon. Hopes are entertained that Johnnie Jason will yet prove to be Australia’s best staying juvenile of the current season. Telling us that Phar Lap ran a mile in 1.45 is not illuminating in the absence of details as to the track used. The form displayed by Normandy and Red Sun at Trentham concerns local backers awaiting Riverton meeting. The Southern Champion Hack Handicap, £3OO (Im.) will be one of the most attractive events at Riverton on Easter Monday. His party have made a good selection in securing T. Webster for Admiral Drake in the Sydney Cup on March 28. Provided his connections are satisfied as to his condition, Phar Lap should run a merry ten furlongs to-morrow afternoon. Galloping fixtures will be in progress under Otautau, Wellington, Ohinemuri, and Westport control this (Saturday). afternoon. F. J. McKay and W. Dawson have been busy this week cantering yearlings by Chief Ruler, Night Raid and Grand Knight. Trotting mentor C. S. Donald won the, Waitaki Hack Handicap at Waimate meeting with Crash, by Kilbroney from Anthem. Local apprentice jockey, W. Austin, has a full book at the Otautau Racing Club’s Annual fixture this afternoon. Tlie minimum weight in Phar Lap’s (9.3) mission to-morrow, Agua Caliente Handicap (one mile and a-quarter) is set at 6st Gib. Our Winton correspondent points out that smart pacer, Blue Mountain, was gaited in W. Cosgrove’s stable thereabouts. It is reported that veteran North Island cross-country horseman, A. McDonald, proposes to ride over fences -again during the winter. During the past week, Red Sea has been kept up to the collar for her engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting. The Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, decided at Aintree (Eng.) yesterday would include thirty leaps over about four miles and 850 yards. The only colonial-bred horse ever successful in the Liverpool G.N. Steeplechase was the Hawkes Bay-foaled gelding Moifaa, owned by Mr S. 11. Gollan. The local geldings, The Smuggler, Rioter and Signaller, are descended from the stud where Moifaa was educated to gain fame in distant England. Moifaa, winner of the world's greatest steeplechase for Maoriland, was bred by Mr M. J. Baird, of Taranaki, as by Natator from Denbigh, by The Painter. Denbigh, who foaled Maoriland’s crack ’chaser, Moifaa, was secured by the latter’s breeder for ten old cows, worth at that time round about £2O. Mr S. H. Gollan (Hawkes Bay) won the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase with Norton and the Liverpool Grand National with Moifaa, a unique double. Giving American horsemen all they know in Australasian experts will be satisfied that colonial W. Elliott will be in Phar Lap’s saddle in Mexico to-morrow. Forty-seven horses survived the first acceptance for the Liverpool Grand National, and twenty of that number raced in last year’s field of forty-two starters. <

When the last mail to hand left England Gregalack and Grakle were the ruling favourites, as successive previous winners, for the Liverpool G.N. Steeplechase. During the current week King Balboa has been standing up to his trainer's demands, but the son of Balboa is, somewhat on the lusty side, although well. P. T. Hogan’s visiting maiden pupil, Night Moth, was bred by her owner Mr R. Acton-Adams, as by Night Raid from Luthy, by Lucullus from Lisp, by Demosthenes. The running of Channelise at the Westport fixture will provide interest, as she figures in the C.J.C. Great Easter Handicap with 7.12, which she won last season carrying 7.1. The enterprise of the Riverton R.C., in keeping the Southern Champion Hack Handicap up to £3OO in value, is more than likely to be rewarded by a strong field on Easter Monday. With three days’ stern cross,-country competition ahead at Riverton, the Otautau Steeplechase will create additional interest, in a well-known hunting district this after noon. Despite her very awkward action, the sturdy Night Raid 'mare, Night Rose, who can get the distance, should run a good race in the Otautau Cup Handicap today. ' N.Z: St. Leger winner, Peter Jackson, by Nigger Minstrel (brother to Desert Gold) from Left, by Martian (imp.)—Lovelorn (imp.) by Melton—Hebrew Maid, represents very stout families Recognized as Australia’s great-finishing jockey, J. Pike is stated to have been outridden by ex-Maorilander, M. McCarten, when the latter, on Kuvera, beat Vauntry in the V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes. Wanganui youngster, Midinette, who won the Pacific Handicap at Trentham on Thursday very brilliantly, is a daughter of Limond —Motley, by Absurd (imp.), one of the greatest sires of speed of late years in Maoriland. The youthful colt, Gaine Carrington, who ran second to Midinette, at Wellington, is a half-brother to Peter Jackson, and is returned as a very promising son of Hunting Cry (imp.) from Left, by Martian. The chestnut, youngster by Songbird— Camieau, by Downshire —Camille, in T. E. Pankhurst’s stable, is a very promising Ideal galloper, and may furnish into a valuable racehorse next season. The Winton correspondent of this paper points out that the novice pacer, Black Shadow, engaged at Otautau from A. McLellan’s Invercargill stable, is well-bred. Although not the direct descendant of registered performers, she is by a well-bred Sungod colt from an equally well-bred dam by Coldstream Bells. She was educated in the Winton district. local trainer R. McLellan has been devoting a considerable amount of attention to tho galloping mare Some Queen of late and without doubt the well-bred descendant of Some Boy IT.—Golden Queen (dam of King Balboa) is looking well and moving attractively. However, she has hitherto failed to race generously and her ownertrainer may have trouble ahead in tho event of an intended Beaumont venture at Easter time. Should Some Queen decide to give of her best in Central Otago, she may get nn the winning-list, but it will be a question of moods, not the lack of galloping ability. As has been remarked on a previous occasion by the Winton correspondent of this journal, the descendants of that proved performer Blue Mountain King are thought a great deal of in the Western District, following on tho success of one of his descendants, Blue Mountain. A handsom" three-year-old colt by Blue Mountain King out of Fortune Chimes is the proud possession of the Winton enthusiast, W. Cosgrove. Although this youngster is turned out at the present time, he showed distinct promise when he was being gaited and his success next season has encouraged great, hopes. It will be no fault of the Winton ment-v should this youngster fail to follow in the footsteps of his sire, as Cosgrove’s work with youngsters is second to none. It was at this stable that. Blue Mountain was gaited. OTAUTAU RACING CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. The following acceptances have been received for the Otautau Racing Club’s annual meeting on March 19: — CROWN STAKES, £4O. The committee decided that the case be directed to the appeal judges of the conference. RUGBY FOOTBALL. STAR CLUB. . ANNUAL MEETING. The Star Rugby Football Club held its annual general meeting on Tuesday. There was a large and enthusiastic gathering of members presided over by Mr Harold Strang, who, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet (as published) referred to the marked improvement shown in the club's junior football last, season and paid a tribute to the valuable work carried out by the coaches, Messrs Stead, McNie, J. S. Ought on, G. Oughton, and J. Lilley. These : old players had given unsparingly of their , time, he said, and the result was very I apparent in the performances of the club’s junior teams. | The motion was seconded by Mr B. 1 Leggatt and carried. Mr J. A. Doig also spoke on the motion congratulating mem- . bers on the club’s satisfactory state. The result of the election of office- 1 bearers was as follows: President, Mr Harold Strang (re-elected unopposed); vice-presidents, Messrs J. Clarkson, J. A. I Doig, N. R. Brown, B. Leggatt, P. Donnelley and Dr Ritchie Crawford; club cap- I tain, Mr T. Riddell; secretary and treasurer, Mr I. W. Campbell (re-elected); assistant secretary, Mr H. Giller; hon. auditors, Messrs B. Leggatt and R. M. Strang (reelected) ; general committee, Messrs Mahoney, J. Lilley, J. Clarkson, R. Donnelley, Stephens, McCall, J. Sievright and L. Stubbs; delegates to S.R.F.U., Messrs N. R. Brown, H. S. Strang, and J. R. Bell; coaches, Messrs A. McNie, J. W. Stead, G. Oughton, J. S. Oughton and J. Lilley; selectors, Messrs Strang, Stead and Riddell. Six new members were elected. The opening day was left in the hands of the incoming committee. REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL REPORT, The annual report of the Southland Rugby Referees’ Association: The committee has much pleasure in expressing its thanks to the members for the Splendid support accorded the association during the year. The membership at the end of the season was 35 active and 9 non-active members, a total of 44. The universal half-holiday, which was in force during the season, made for some good football, and members controlled matches for five grades on Saturdays, and also the sixth grade inter-school matches on Wednesdays. In these grades 46 teams took part, and the task of the Appointment Board was no light one, particularly in the event of a referee not being available. The members of the board did yeoman service for the association, and thanks are directed to them for their work. The association held 23 meetings during the season, and the attendances were excellent, members displaying great keenness in following the activities of their association. The average attendance at these meetings was 26, a decided improvement on that of last year, which was 23. In addition three committee meetings were held, all being fully attended. It is a matter for regret that the. association was not represented at the annual conference of the New Zealand Rugby Referees’ Association, held at Hamilton, as this is the most important method whereby the association is kept in touch with modern rulings and interpretations. It is to be hoped that the matter will be rectified this season, as with the pending alteration in the scrum formation, and the adaption of new rulings, it is vital that our referees should be kept fully informed as to the latest methods of rulings and decisions.

Giving to the financial depression it was unfortunately found to be impossible to play the annual match with the Otago referees. The shield therefore remains in their hands until the coming season, when it is hoped an endeavour will be made to lift it. The thanks of the association are expressed to those members who travelled to the country districts to

officiate, and also to the union for its financial assistance and for the use of the committee room at Rugby Park in which meetings are held. It is with deep regret that we have to record the passing of one of our members, Mr A. Falconer, who succumbed after a short illness. The sympathy of members was conveyed to the parents in their severe loss. Messrs G. Withers and M. Neave severed their connection with the ! association, being transferred north to other positions, and the good wishes of the members will go with them. Nine representative matches were played, only three of which, however, were seen here, the balance being played on tour. Against Otago Mr E. Budd refereed, whilst Mr J. L. Oughton took the game against- Wairarapa. For the match with the Australian touring team Mr A. B. Rowlands was appointed and members were afforded a good display with the whistle by him. The season’s activities were brought to a fitting close with a social which was well attended by members, representatives of the Press and Rugby Union also being present. AU indications point to the coming season being a very heavy one and we trust that members will continue their support to the association as heartily as in the past. We wish to extend to those players who are retiring from club footbaU a cordial invitation to join up with the association and help further the progress of the game locally. THE THREE-TWO-THREE SCRUM. Wanganui, March 18.
