MATAURA MATTERS.
To the Editor.
Sir, —I do not know whether to be surprised Or amused at the letter which appeared in your Monday’s issue under the nom de plume of “Robust Jack." Bluff Charley would' probably have been a better name. This letter from beginning to end is nothing but bluff, and it is easily seen that his sole reason for writing is to throw out a smoke-screen over the doings and the neglect of his council. Coming to the picture theatre, it is very pleasing to note that since my previous letter appeared, three or four local unemployed have been given work on the job. It is rather amusing, the twaddle “Bluff
Charlie”—l beg your pardon—“ Robust Jack,” has written in stating that only specialists and foremen were engaged in the actual building of the theatre at the time I wrote, but the longer one lives, the more one learns, and if the men who shovel gravel, wheelbarrows and act as carpenters in this class of building are specialists, well, I don’t know where you get the rank and file of the workers from. Considering that this is the only building of its kind ever built of likely to be built in Mataura, he is quite right in stating that more Matauraites are engaged in it than in any similar building in Mataura. It is also rather pleasing to note that the contractor is getting his gravel locally. Probably it would cost rather much to got it in Gore or Lumsden, and the same thing applies to the blacksmith work. Probably "Robust Jack” could have added that the foremen and specialists get some of their meals in the town, and also buy their cigarettes and matches there. With such as “Robust Jack” at the head of the town, I am more convinced than ever that a Progressive League or Ratepayers’ Association would be of great advantage to the ratepayers and residents of the town.—l am, etc.,
CITIZEN.
