WALLACE COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Wallace County Council held at Otautau on Friday was attended by the following councillors: Messrs W. B. Hopcroft (chairman), G. Stroud, John Horrell, H. F. Blatch, W. T. James, James H. Smith, F. J. Linscott, W. J. A. McGregor and T. A. Buckingham. Correspondence. Mr McGibbon, secretary Eastern Bush School Committee, wrote drawing the attention of the council to wandering stock in that locality. Councillor Smith said some action should be taken, as the cattle were a menace to the school children, and they were deliberately turnqd out on the road. It was left to the ranger to take action. Mr P. Gardner, secretary of the Waiau branch of the Farmers’ Union, wrote stating that a meeting was being held in the Clifden Hall on Saturday, April 9, when the question of de-rating of farm lands was to be discussed. He extended an invitation to the chairman, Councillors McGregor and Smith to attend and gave their views on the matter. The invitation was accepted, and it was resolved that any councillor finding it convenient to be present should also attend. Mr Simon McKenzie, Orepuki, advised that there was a water hole on the County road at his gate, which caused damage to his paddock, and he applied for four-inch tiles to let the water away. He agreed to do the work to the road-line fence to the satisfaction of the engineer, and would take delivery of the tiles at Te Tua railway station. It was resolved that the council supply pipes, and that the work be done to the satisfaction of the engineer. Mr D. Ballam, secretary of the Otautau Unemployment Committee, forwarded the following resolution which had been passed at last meeting: “That as other centres are receiving an allowance of mutton, the Wallace County Council be requested to make application for an allowance of mutton for distribution amongst the unemployed in Wallace County.” Application is to be made for mutton.

Mr Alek Saunders, Ringway, asked the council to consider maintaining the road that leads to his property from the main highway along Ringway Ridges, and extend same for one chain this way at the foot of the hill, as it was impassable in wet weather. If the work could not be done as reasonably as the engineer expected he offered to do it himself. The matter was left in the hands of the member for the riding and engineer, with power to act. Messrs P. Hamilton and David Jenkins, Tuat-apere, made application for a ditch to be put through the property of Mr D. D Jenkins under the No. 5 Unemployment Relief Scheme. They were prepared to undertake the supervision of the work, and provide tools, horses, etc., and also to insure the men. It was resolved to forward the recommendation to the central executive. Mr John Plunkett. South Hillend. again wrote regarding his application for an outfall through Messrs Muir and Kelly’s paddocks, and also through a culvert across the school road. Nothing had been done so far, and he was anxious to get the outfall brought up without further delay. It was resolved to inform the writer that unless the work is completed by March 31 the Drainage Act will be enforced. Order Paper. . Cr. Hopcroft moved that the following amount be voted for expenditure in Pourakino riding: Main Highway, maintenance gravelling, Riverton-Otautau, £3O. Cr. Smith moved that the following amounts be voted for expenditure in Waiau riding; Main Highway, Argyle-Tuatapere, maintenance (Bates to Tuatapere section), £1 for £3, £100; Tomlinson and Lay road, maintenance, £2O; total, £l2O. Cr. Blatch moved that the following amounts be voted for expenditure in Mararoa riding: Main Highway, Wreys BushMossburn, maintenance gravelling, £18; Main Highway, Te Anau-Lumsden-Mossburn section, maintenance, £1 for £3, £3O; total. £4B. Engineer's Report. The engineer (Mr J. G. C. Baker) submitted the following report: Since last meeting the weather has been excellent for outside work, and good progress has been made with most of the work in hand. The two new bridges on the Cameron road section of the Argyle-Tuatapere main highway are completed. The various land drainage works being done under unemployment scheme No. 5 as mentioned in last month’s report are being carried on as well as the reduced allocations will allow. Regarding the application of Messrs Edginton, Watson and Minty asking that construction of bridge across the Orawia river at Feldwick be proceeded with, and which was agreed to by the council at last meeting, the Public Works engineer advises that the Government cannot at the present time allow the expenditure of the grant for this work. The contractor for the supply of crushed maintenance gravel for the Wairio riding section of the Winton-Ohai main highway has now almost completed this work, and has delivered an excellent sample by putting the Jacobs River gravel at Wreys Bush through a lightning swing hammer crusher. Some of the members of the Southland unemployment executive visited the lower Waimatuku with the view of deciding the matter of some prepesed improvement to the outfall for the Taunamau creek now badly blocked through the diversion of the Waimatuku stream. After looking into various proposals it was decided that provided k satisfactory arrangement for future maintenance could be made with the responsible parties the direct sea outfall, be made along the line pegged out some time ago by Mr A. McGavock, the first 45 chains to a lagoon to be done under the Unemployment Scheme No. 5, the balance (some 15 chains) to the sea will be made by Mr T. S. Muirhead, who offered to arrange for the making of this portion of the new channel. Other Business. It was resolved that the Power Board be informed that the council was prepared to collect the rates providing any extra cost incurred in collecting same would bo borne by the Power Board. The following tenders were let:— Maintenance gravelling, Lay and Tomlinson road, Orawia: Mr G. Gorton, 2/5. Maintenance gravelling, M.H.
