Wellington and Waimate Racing Club fixtures will be in session on Thursday, March 17.

Eastern District-owned Tray Bond is now trained at Timaru by mentor E. J. Ellis.

Reported that Mr J. M. Samson’s string of gallopers is to bo reduced after the Easter session.

Wyndham Trotting Club will provide a track on Wednesday suitable for fast times.

Rioter was making a noise when working on the Southland Racing Chib tracks last week.

The Lincolnshire Handicap will rank as the leading opening event of the English season to-morrow.

C. S. Donald heads the list of N.Z. winning trotting trainers and also heads the reinsmen’s record.

Tile world’s greatest cross-country race, Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, is duo on Friday next.

Grakle, winner cf the last Liverpool Grand National, is expected to start again in this year’s event.

Recent payments indicate that Jaloux and Azalea will race at home at Easter instead of Auckland.

The Thompson Handicap (one mile) will form a special attraction at ’lrenthain on Thursday next, March 17.

The debut of Signaller, threequarter brother to The Smuggler, may be delayed until the Riverton R.C’s. gathering.

Christchurch-owned light harness pacing crack, Royal Silk, has been working out under saddle at Addington.

Successful cross-country performer, Claremore, is to be piloted during the steeplechase season by L. Dulieu.

The Southland pacers, King Pointer and Satin King, have been engaged in leading Addington Easter events.

Black Duke and Assemble will race at Waimate on Thursday next, but whether Riverton or Riccarton at Easter is undecided.

The Smuggler accomplished a satisfactory mile task on the S.R.S. course proper, wide out, on Saturday in Imin 49sec.

Curiosity will be expressed at Otautau on Saturday next, in the event of a start, to see Overhaul as a ’chaser.

All must be well with champion pacer, Harold Logan, as he is freely engaged at Addington tit Easter time.

Following on flat racing experiences at Trentham this week, Taragona may bo schooled for hurdling.

The crack West Coast square trotter, Olive Nelson, has been entered for the Addington Easter gathering.

Thurnham gelding, Hounslow, who promises to jump well, is to be schooled over hurdles at Riccarton after Easter.

The Commonwealth’s leading jumping event, Onkaparinga Easter Steeplechase, with 35 entries, in Adelaide, is due on Eastej- Monday. Very large entries were received for the Rosehill meeting on Saturday last, with New Zealand represented in every race on the card. The Australian J.C. will hold a special Sydney Harbour Bridge Opening meeting on Saturday next, with the racing on Randwick track. Chipping Norton Stakes, £750, w.f.a., with penalties and allowances (l|m.), will be the feature of the Harbour Bridge races at Randwick. Outsider Captivate, winner of Cromwell Handicap and trophy for a Central Otago owner, on Friday, is a well-bred five-year-old gelding by Grandcourt—Peg o’ My Heart. Taranaki-owned Silvermine (a Railway Handicap acceptor) is not to be given a chance to win his second Thompson Hand: cap, his owner relying on Awaken instead. When Queensland mare, Lady Linden, won the Newmarket Handicap recently, she set i:t nought one of the greatest plunges of late years on Sydney colt Winooka. A field of fifteen acceptors for the Thomp .son Handicap on Thursday, as comparer! with nineteen last year, is very satisfactory with so many horses away in Australia. Reported that- youngster Courtyard {Grandcourt —First Blow) and full brother to Second Wind, is under offer to Australia —he won at Napier Park meeting re cently. Second in the G.N. Derby, third in the N.Z. Derby and fourth in the New Zealand Cup, Peter Jackson looks to have a great chance in the N.Z. St. Leger at Trentham this week. As a preliminary race to her Great Autumn Handicap effort on March 29, at Riccarton, Hod Sea has been engaged in the Sockburn Handicap (1.1 m. run on Easter Monday (March 28). With the exception of one race (Royal Stakes), the prize money for eight of the Auckland R.C’s. classic events for which entries close on June 10 for next season, have been reduced. The crack three-year-old, Bronze Eagle, will not be in evidence at the Wellington R..C. Autumn meeting this week, as he is reported to have been amiss after a recent gallop. A feature of the opening day of the Ohinemuri J.C’s. Annual fixture on Thursday and Saturday will be the McGuire Memorial Steeplechase, in which Wiltshire heads the handicap at 11.8.

A special report to Wellington Dominion states that Bronze Eaglo struck himself when executing a brilliant gallop at Takanini. He will probably have to miss all early autumn engagements.

The Auckland-owned, Eaglet, who was on the verge of a breakdown, has been retired from the turf. During her career she won just over £6775 in just over three seasons.

Auckland mentor. J. Gray, will not produce a team at Trentham this week, consequently the smart galloper, Huntingdon, although an acceptor, will be an absentee from the W.R.C. fixture.

It rained heavily in Hawkes Bay last week and this fact met with the approval of the connections of Hunting Cry, who hope to strip him fit and well at the Wellington R.C. Autumn meeting.

With, tho going yielding after a heavy shower on Saturday morning, King Balboa and Night Rose galloped fast during the early stages of a seven furlong bout on tho S.R.C. course proper, flagged out, to slacken homo in 1.34 3-5.

Tho first worker of the morning on Saturday, Red Sunset (alone) covered six furlongs in 1.20 1-5. She galloped well,

although pouring rain and slippery grass were not in her favour as she completed the final stages.

It is announced from the north that crack jockey H. Gray, who now claims 58 wins for the current season, will be at Trentham on Thursday to pilot Gay Crest, The Quorn, Inflation and Autopay.

Fairly close in on the S.R.C. track on Saturday, the pace was on when Rioter and Sailing Home (featherweight) ran half a mile in t>o l-ssec, five furlongs in 1.5 4-5, and six furlongs in 1.17 2-5, an attractive effort.

Golden Wings is reported to have acquitted himself well in recent tasks on the Woodville tracks. This will be interesting news for backers in view of what may happen at the Wellington R.C. meeting .this week.

The Endeavour Lodge weaker sex i>erformers, Enwood and Crubenmore, were produced in excellent shape on the S.R.C. track on Saturday morning, after the rain ceased, and ran down six furlongs easily in 1.18 4-5.

The Dominion reports that owiier-trainer G. W. New hits received another offer from Australia for King Colossus. If not sold, the juvenile, who has been moving well again, will bo a starter in the N.Z. St. Leger at Trentham.

In a seven furlong task on the S.R.C. course proper on Saturday, Cupid's Dart hung on to Attractive Lady well over the last three-quarters of a mil* in 1.21 —the latter has been building up of late.

Sleefon and Miss Redowa, separately, were not unduly hurried on behalf of their respective trainers on Saturday, but the latter could have carried on well, if necessary, after a short burst.

Thornton carried weight and was always travelling well when associated with Jack a’Dandy on Saturday on the S.R.C. track. The pair were on terms at the finish in 1.34 3-5, but- the former took the honours.

Short of work when he left his native land to reach Sydney a few days ago, Night March was seen to advantage in finishing second to Ammon Ra at Rosehill on Saturday. The race should do the Night Raid horse good.

Generally looked upon as a sprinter, Tea Party pulled up sound on Saturday after galloping in a promising fashion over eightfurlongs as a companion to Cough. The latter has been getting through useful work for F. W. Ellis of late.

The baby racehorse, Ythan, who scored for Mrs A. McDonald’s stable at the recent Dannevirke fixture, is a son of imported Colossus (Polymelus) and reported to be a nice juvenile in embryo for next season.

The Smuggler was galloped over about nine furlongs on Saturday. Timed to a moving start from the mile mark, he covered six furlongs in 1.21, and when picked up by a youngster from R. McKay’s team, he ran home in 1.49. The tall chestnut pulled up well.

With Strong Light as her pacemaker over the early' stages, Ruling Light covered ten furlongs well on Saturday. The first half was run in 55 2-ssec, five furlongs in 1.9, six in 1.23„ one mile in 1.51 2-5 ,and the mile and a quarter occupied 2.19 1-5 —a stablemate brought the filly home easily.

Given to running out wide when the final pinch came in her races, Milliner was tried out alone on the S.R.C. course proper on Saturday with a powerful horseman in the saddle. Cross-country jockey, G. Dempster, was the selected pilot and the Gladstone Lodge jockey kept the daughter of Some Boy II to the straight and narrow path by' the way to run down five furlongs under real weight nicely in Imin 6 4-ssee.

In discussing the race for the Hokonui Hack Handicap (7f.) on the second day of the recent Gore R.C. Summer fixture, when Tea Party scored from Jack a Dandy, with Traylavah close up, favourable mention was made of the improved form displayed by the lastnamed and his prospects of future success. This summing up appears to have been borne out at the Cromwell J.C. meeting on Friday, when the juvenile referred to won the Lowburn Hack Handicap ranking as fourth fancy. Mr J. M. Sampson's colt is bred on impressive lines, as he is a son of imported Tea Tray (imp.) from Lava, a smart and enduring little galloper in her day. There is no doubt about the descent of Lava, as she was got by Solferino (imp.) from Forndess. by Multiform (a proved descendant of Musket) from Dreamer, by Mostyn—Moorooroo, by Trenton (son of Musket) from Nightmare (a gem of the Australian Stud Book). On his dam's side, Traylavah is closely related to the Invercar-gill-owned mare Thornton. This Cromwell winner, Traylavah, is the first foal of his dam and he was bred by the late Mr F. Griffen of Dunedin. Provided he keeps sound, C. Gieseler’s pupil may go on to better things than last week's display, as his effort at Gore certainly encouraged this anticipation.

Foaled in 1926 and costing 75gns as a yearling, the Cromwell Handicap winner of Friday, to whit, Captivate, descends from an old-fashioned but stout female line, as he is by the well-bred English stallion, Grandcourt- (sire of Second Wind) from Peg O’ My Heart, by Birkdale from Dear Heart, by Cotter de Lion from Katie Fergusson, by Musket from Dundee Katie (imp.). It is needless to say that the success of Mr Bruce’s locally-owned representative was popular when ho accounted for the leading event of the Cromwell J.C. meeting.

Why a wailing body of politicians in Maoriland cannot see their way clear to decrease the burden of taxation on racing, permit clubs to receive investments by telegraph, and legalize the receipt of wagers at the town offices of racing and trotting clubs, passes all understanding. In the meantime they are acting in agreement to cripple a great revenue-producing amusement, and driving capital and horses out of New Zealand to Australia to an extent that they do not recognize. Parliamentarians will awaken to these facte when it is too late and they will find that their alleged moral advisers, as on many previous occasions, have misled them to an extent which will hamper the welfare of New Zealand from a financial point of view, to say nothing of the oppression of professional people connected with the turf and the monetary loss to farmers (as produce providers) , shopkeepers, breeders of bloodstock, the railways, post and telegraph departments, newspapers, the thousands of persons who gain casual employment through racing, and many other worthy persons and institutions.

The well-known southern trainer, W. Stone (reports The Dominion) recently decided to try his luck in the North Island, and made a favourable start by purchasing tho three-year-old chestnut filly Alpinist, by Gainscourt from Mountain Lass, at a figure in the vicinity, of 50 guineas. Alpinist, carrying Stone’s colours, won the Tahoraite Hack Handicap, of 50 sovs, on the first day at Dannevirke this week, and ran second the next day.. Stone has not definitely decided where he will establish his headquarters, but in the meantime has taken a couple of boxes at Awapuni, and hopes soon to get another team together.

In the Ohai Trot, at the Riverton meeting, Sunflash has ‘been reassessed to 36 yards behind. He was handicapped on 24 yards, but a placing at the Invercargill fixture was overlooked when the reassessments, were made.

THE WELLINGTON MEETING. TRENTHAM TRACK NOTES. SATURDAY’S WORK. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, March 12. Visiting horses have not yet begun to arrive on the scene for the Wellington meeting and this morning’s gallops at Tren. tham were confined to locally-trained horses. The plough was exclusively used and it provided excellent going. While still dark Normandy ran six fur-, longs comfortably in 1.22, and Red Sun dill the last half mile of seven furlongs in 51 2-5. Weatherstep was matched with Autopay over five furlongs, just shading him at the end of an attractive gallop in 1.2 4-5, the last half in 49 3-5. Both appeared fo be carrying similar weights. Gold Sand after a slow beginning took 1.6 1-5 for five furlongs, the last half in 51 3-5. Lady Rene did a similar task in 1.5 4-5, the last half mile in 51 2-5. Miss Hastings and Capetown were together throughout a comfortable seven furlongs in 1.36 1-5. Might drew right away from Clangor at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 3-5, the last half in 50 2-5, but Clangor’s showing was not right. Gay Song, after getting the worse of the start beat Sir Pombal by a good length at the close of a half-mile in 50 1-5. Eminent did better than Lyrical over six furlongs in 1.18 1-5, the last half in 52 1-5. Over a similar distance Royal Game beat Mullaboden by two lengths in 1.19 2-5, the last half in 53 4-5. St. Roger worked pleasingly' in beating Waratah by-,a neck over five furlongs in 1.3 4-5, the last half in 50 4-5. For the same distance Marjoram recorded 1.4 in defeating Araios by 1.19 2-5, the last half in 53 4-5. Joi de Vai and Foghorn finished together at the end of seven furlongs in 1.32, the last half in 53 3-5. Late Jest slipped over half a mile attractively in 49 4-5. Cimabue, whose leg is not too sound, took 51 1-5 for the same task. Tobaccoland, who has returned from a month’s working on the beach, did five furlongs under a hold in 1.5 1-5, the last half mile in 52 3-5. He looks well but may’ require a race or two. Sailing beat Cqlossical by a length over three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. Cockpen was three-quarters of a length better than Traymela over half a mile in 59 3-5. The only visitor yet on hand is Earthquake who worked late.

PHAR LAP WELL. A STIFF WORKOUT. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) New York, March 11. At Agua Caliente on Friday Phar Lap galloped two miles and was then put through a seven furlongs work out against time, clipping each furlong off in 13 seconds. He showed no lameness after the stiff work. His owner, Mr Davis, said that he will positively’ start in the March Twenty Handicap. All traces of the stone bruise which interrupted his training recently have gone. THE AUSTRALIAN TURF. RACING AT ROSEHILL. AMMON RA BEATS NIGHT MARCH. NEW ZEALANDERS GOOD DAY.
