A STATE LOTTERY
PROPOSAL VIGOROUSLY CONDEMNED. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, March 13. Speaking at St. John’s Church to-night, the Rev. J. R. Blanchard, referring to the possibility of an art union in order to assist the unemployed, said that such art union would be a State lottery and would involve the Government exploiting the public for the benefit of the State itself. Mr Blanchard vigorously condemned the proposal, concluding: “In view of all the facts, it is not too much to say that, though a considerable sum might be raised by such a lottery, the essential fact would remain that its inauguration would be the selling of the nation’s soul for the magnified ‘thirty pieces of silver.’ I belieye the heart of this Dominion is really sound and that the people expect the Government to resist the temptation of a State lottery' and to refuse to be such salesman, at the same rime taking the opportunity to make an end of the whole art union business of which all decent people have become heartily sick.”
