WAIKAKA NOTES

The weather has now taken a turn for the better and beautiful sunshine prevails. While the crops are now looking very good and are ripening fast, the grass harvest is almost finished. For some months now a few men have been prospecting in the district. At last, it seems, their labours have been rewarded as it is stated some have found gold in rich deposits. They are now attempting to float a company with the ■object of obtaining the precious metal and, if this is successful, it will be a great boon to the district. When the monthly meeting of the Waikaka P.W.M.U. was held in the church on March 3, it was attended by 15 members, over whom Mrs Gow presided. After opening the meeting with devotional exercises, extracts were read from “The Life of the Judsons,” After the meeting was closed with the Benediction, afternoon tea, supplied by Mesdames S. Black and J. Cullen, was partaken of. On Friday evening the annual social was held in the North Chatton Church. There was a good attendance of people representing all the district. At this social the performers excelled all past efforts and gave tjjo audience a good evening’s entertainment. The following was the programme for the evening:—Hymn, congregation; reading from the Scripture and prayer, the Rev. M. Gow; hymn, congregation. 'The Rev. M. Gow, in a few words, thanked the members of the church for their assistance during the year; anthem, choir; recitation, Master Jack McQueen; solo, Mrs McQueen; anthem, choir; solo, Miss Johnston; recitation, Master Stanley Robertson; solo, Miss I. Collins; solo, Miss G. Simpson; anthem, choir; duet, Masters J. McQueen and S. Robertson; solo, Miss Johnston; anthem, choir. At a suitable interval Mr Gow introduced the. Rev. A. W. Armstrong, the speaker for the evening, who gave an inspiring address which was greatly appreciated. After all the items had been given Mr Geo. Aitken moved a vote of thanks to the speaker and the performers and this was carried. ’ The Rev. M. Gow then pronounced the Benediction, after which supper, supplied by the ladies of the district, was handed round. In order to obtain funds to help to pay for the new tennis court on Tuesday evening the Tennis Club conducted a dance. A fair! number of people gathered to dance to music supplied by Wallis' Orchestra and the M.C., Mr W. Asher, kept the evening going, with a swing.
