SEVERE WINTER
SOUTHERN EUROPE SUFFERS. AN APPEAL FOR SUCCOUR. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) London, March 8. In contrast to the mildness of the weather in Britain, Southern Europe is experiencing an exceptionally severe winter. Bucharest reports that the town of Sulina on the Great Delta of the Danube is isolated, and the Mayor is pathetically appealing for succour. The telephone is the only means of communication. The town was frozen in a fortnight ago. There are no mails and newspapers, and it. is now almost without food. Relief ships have instantly become gripped in the ice and there are grave fears that a catastrophic flood will follow the thaw which has begun in the upper Danube. LIVES LOST LN CAUCASUS. Moscow, March 9. The Caucasus is having the worst winter in 140 years. Many lives have been lost and there have been unprecedented snowfalls. One village was completely buried in an avalanche, and 75 of the bodies dug out included 25 school children.
