SAVING IN BRITAIN

ESTIMATES REDUCED OVER <£6,000,000 GRANTS CUT DOWN (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, March 9. . The Education Estimates for the coming financial year show an aggregate cost of £52,006,461. This is a net decrease of £6,371,137 on the cost for 1931. Reductions are made under all headings which cover expenditure on the Board of Education, museums, art galleries, universities and colleges. Grants under the new estimates to local education authorities total £38,755,000. a decrease of £5,931,000. It is assumed that the cost per child in elementary education ha« been reduced from £1 2/3.9 last year to £1 0/11.7 this year, the first decrease for several years. In 1913-14 it was 7/11.2 per child.
