BASKETBALL

SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL REPORT. The fourth annual report of the Secondary Schools’ Basketball Association states: The 1931 season was a very successful one for secondary schools’ basketball. An increased interest was shown in the game, the number of entries totalling fifteen, being one more than that of the previous year. Seven of these were seniors and eight juniors. During the season, with keen competition in both grades, there were witnessed some good matches. In the senior grade, the most outstanding performances were between High School A and Technical College A, when some very good play was noticeable. In the junior grade, the three best teams, St. Catherine’s, High School A, and Technical College A, proved to be fairly even, each possessing some really good players. On the whole, the Technical team showed most promise for the future, although this team and High School drew on both occasions when they met. High School A senior played also in the Southland Basketball Association matches, and the increased experience thus gained added to their prowess on the fields so that Technical College senior A did really well to put up such a good fight against them. Invercargill teams played tea’ms from other centres, Technical College defeating Dunedin Technical College and Christchurch Technical College while Girls’ Hieh School were victorious against Gore High School. These results speak well for the standard of play here. The winners of trophies—Doig Cup for juniors, and the Secondary School Association cup for seniors—were St. Catherine’s and High School A respectively. The run-ners-up were Technical College A (senior) and High School A and Technical College A (equal) junior. Owing to the lateness of the season, together with wet weather and the intervention of holidays, it was impossible to play a complete second rounu. It is to be hoped that in future an earlier start can be made, when teams may meet

in more than one match, a much more satisfactory arrangements. The balance-sheet shows a credit balance of £9 19/2, as compared with £6 18/3 for last year.
