MANDEVILLE NOTES

The annual meeting of the Womens Institute was held in the hall on Thursday last, Mrs Gordon Sheed presided over a fair’ attendance. The annual report showed an increase of membership, which now stands at 27. The meetings during the year had been most instructive as well as pleasant, and the finances were in a healthy condition. The report concluded by stating that the institute had more than justified its existence and trusted that the incoming vear would witness even greater success. The following appointments were made for the ensuing year: Mrs J. H. Mc-Ix-od president; Mrs George Graham, secretary; Miss Emily Horrell, treasurer. An interesting programme was arranged for the next six months. A competition for the best vase of flowers resulted in Mrs, H W C. Horrell securing the greater number of votes. Miss Emily Horrell was second, with Mrs G. Sheed and Mrs J. H. McLeod close up. _ The recent rains have improved the turnip crops and pastures immensely. Turnips that were on the verge of being resown before the rain came have now developed into most promising crops. The grain crops also have improved far beyond expectations. . Lambs are fattening fairly well and a large number have been drafted fat. Shearing finished about ten days ago and the crutching of lambs is about completed. A fair proportion of oats has been cut and some threshing of grain as well as grass has been done. The rtcent drop in wool prices was a serious matter to the local growers, the bulk of whom had their clips at the last Dunedin and Invercargill sales. It would be of interest to those having grain to thresh to know what is the ruling price to pay per hour. It is stated that even the same mill hands ask twopence per hour more.
