COLAC BAY NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) —- Mrs Bradley (Pukemaori) returned home on Thursday after spending a holiday at Longwood. Miss L. Goodwillie (Tihaka) has returned home from Bluff. Mrs R. Whittle and Mrs T. Egerton spent the week-end at Invercargill as the guests of Mrs Ayers. Miss McLean, who has been appointed relieving teacher at the local school, commenced her duties last Monday. An interesting lantern lecture on “New Zealand Beaches” was given on Thursday last by Mr H. Foston, of Wellington, who showed 200 slides of the coastline of New Zealand, including some of the local beach. Preparations for the trip to the mutton- • bird islands are now well in hand and the ■ transporting vessels are due here between the 15th and 17th of this month. The local fishermen report some good catches of both bluecod and groper during the last few fine days. The annual school sports and picnic ■was held on Wednesday afternoon, March 2, although the attendance was adversely affected, owing to the industries’ fair at . Riverton. The energetic sports committee kept things moving and in several cases, owing to close finishes, the judges had a difficult task. Blindfolded wheelbarrow race, Miss McClean 1, Miss T. Wixon 2. Hop, step and jump, W. Cleaver 1, J. Marsh and T. Te Au (equal) 2. Tug-of-war, Colac beat Roundhill. In the evening a dance was held in the Drill Hall, music being supplied by Messrs E. Shore and J. Gregg, while Mr T. Te Au was M.C. The evening’s competition was won by Miss T. Egerton.
