TELEPHONE CHARGES

LITTLE LIKELIHOOD OF REDUCTION. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, March 9. There was little likelihood of the Government making a reduction in telephone charges, the Postmaster-General said in the House of Representatives this afternoon in reply to an urgent question. Mr J. A. Nash (Government, Palmerston) asked whether the Hon. A. Hamilton would give immediate relief to farmers using party telephone lines. Under the present conditions the price charged was considered to be excessive, and unless a reduction was made, many of the users would have to give up their ’phones. Mr Hamilton said he fully appreciated the farmers’ difficulty but the Post Office had to run mainly on business lines. At the present time there did not seem to be much chance of a reduction in the charges which were fairly reasonable.
