RED CROSS SOCIETY

INVERCARGILL SUB-CENTRE. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Invercargill Sub-Centre of the New Zealand branch of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John 'Was held yesterday afternoon, Mr R. A. Anderson, C.M.G., presiding. In moving the adoption of the annual report (which has already been published) the chairman referred to the good work that had been continued by the executive. Their efforts were made quietly and unostentatiously, but the work accomplished was of great value to the unfortunate patients who found themselves in hospital. For nearly 14 years the Red Cross had helped to care for soldier patients. It was fortunate that funds had been gathered when people had been moved to give freely and had been able to do so. It would be a very difficult matter to raise funds month by month under prevailing conditions. Although the fund was diminishing, no one would suggest that the work should be curtailed. If the money unfortunately ran out some effort would have to be made to ensure that the work which had been done so well would not be allowed to lapse. The demands on the fund in the past year had been heavy. Nearly double the number of parcels had been distributed and the total expenditure showed an increase of £Bl on that of the previous year. At the present rate of expenditure the fund would be practically exhausted at the end of six years. It was, however, to be hoped that the necesaty for such heavy expenditure would not continue; but even if the funds were exhausted the executive would have the satisfaction of knowing that the money had been used for the purpose for which it had been gathered. The motion was seconded by Mrs W. P. Smith and carried without discussion. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President, Mrs W. P. Smith (reelected) ; vice-president, Mrs J. G. Petrie (re-elected) ; executive, Mesdames 11. Acton, A. Hanan, A. Hamilton, R. Henderson and T. Henshelwood.
