CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

THE GORE BODY. QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the Gore Chamber of Commerce held last evening was attended by Messrs A. J. Kerse (chairman), T. Sherborne, H. E. Bacon, C. R. B. Wilkinson, A. T. Newman, G. Smith, R. S. Green, A. C. Caverhill, W. B. Johnston, A. L. Dolamore and A. H. Aitken. A letter was received from the Southland League inviting the chamber to appoint delegates to a conference of local body representatives to be held at Invercargill on Saturday for the purpose of discussing the question of the Kingston— Queenstown Road. The meeting passed a resolution to the effect that in the opinion of the chamber the time was inopportune for the work to be proceeded with. The matter of representation at the conference was referred to the president and secretary. An invitation was received from the Invercargill Chamber for the Gore Chamber to be represented at the annual meeting and luncheon to-morrow. It was decided to accept the invitation. A letter was received from the Associated Chambers of Commerce stating that at the last conference of the association it was decided that in order to ensure the operations of the association being continued on the present lines, the provision of finance needed to be placed on a sounder basis than hitherto. To that end, it approved of a budget system, under which each chamber would be allocated a certain sum to find in addition to the present nominal affiliation fee of 2/6 a member. The budget having been completed the sum of £2O had been allocated to the Gore Chamber for 1931-32. It was decided to pay the allocation when funds were available. The chairman reported that the canvass for new members had met with an excellent response and he felt sure that under normal conditions the chamber would have little difficulty in substantially increasing its membership. Already 17 new members had been secured and there were many still to be waited upon. The Chamber decided to place on record its appreciation of the assistance given to it by the acting-stationmaster (Mr Familton)'.
