OVER 1,000 REPORTED KILLED. (Rec. 11.25 p.m. Shanghai, January 31. This morning the Japanese sent up 20 aeroplanes to demonstrate over the Chapei hinterland without bombing. Alleging that the Hong Kew hotel was within the northern area of the Intarnational Settlement and housed Chinese snipers, the Japanese entered at 8 o’clock this morning, cleared the guests out and sprinkled the place with paraffin. They then set fire to the hotel. This is the first action taken within the settlement against the Chinese, seriously challenging the authority of the municipal council. Three days' fighting in and about Chapei resulted in enormous damage. it is believed that the Japanese lost 500 killed and the Chinese many times more. The removal of the capital from Nanking to Loyang indicates China’s intention to escape the possible attentions of the Japanese fl ept up the Yangtse. Food supplies at Shanghai are sufficient only for three weeks. Rice is already soaring in price.
