TAPANUI NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) Records from the Tapanui State Nursery for the month of December are: Total rainfall, 5.44 in; maximum fall, 1.54 in December 22; maximum temperature, 84 degrees on the 16th; minimum, 33 degrees on the 13th. Tire Ven. Archdeacon Fitchett, Dunedin, conducted the service at All Saints’ Church, Tapanui, last Sunday, when there w r as a large attendance. Archdeacon Fitchett will also take the service next Sunday and will celebrate Holy Communion. In the absence of the Rev. W. H. Norton on holiday, the afternoon service at the Presbyterian Church, Waikoikoi, was conducted by Messrs Elder and Friend, from the Training Institute, Auckland. An examination in Bible knowledge and memory work was held recently for the children in Tapanui High School. The memory work for Stds. 3 and 4, w’ere the books of the Bible and Psalm 27, for Stds. V and VI the memory work was the Corinthians 13th Chapter, and the books of the Bible. The Bible knowledge questions were on the work done in the weekly Bible Class'. The memory work was so well done that extra prizes had to be given. The awards were: Std Hl—Giris: Isobel Kirk, memory work 95 marks, Scripture knowledge 60, total 155. Boys: Fred Verton, memory work 81, Scripture knowledge 84, total 165. Std IV—Girls: Marjorie Walker, memory work 97, Scripture 84, total 181; Peggie Collie 96, 74, total 170; special prize for memory work and Scripture, Florence Crawford 98. Std Vl—Girls: Eva Norton, 95, 88, total 183; Chrissie Keir 94, 79, total 173. Boys: Leonard Dickison 92, 81, total 173. Std V.—Allan Niles 86, 85, total 176. A dance was held by the Moa Flat Tennis Club on Wednesday evening. The hall was beautifully decorated with streamers and greenery, and music was supplied by Miss Breusell and Messrs H. Breusell and G. Stevenson. Mrs C. Swain played extras and Mr L. Breusell acted as M.O. There was a good attendance. Among visitors to Tapanui last week was Mr E. Clarkson, organizing secretary of the Federation of Master Printers of New Zealand. Mr Clarkson was on a motor tour from the West Coast, Mt. Cook and through Otago Central, camping en route. Mrs Margaret Brownlie, wife of Mr William Brownlie, who died in Dunedin last Friday, was well known in the Heriot district and much sympathy is felt for her husband and family. An old resident of the Edievale district. Mrs Helen Haugh, died at Gore on Saturday. Mrs Haugh was the wife of the late Mr John Haugh, "Sunnyside,” Edievale, and was 82 years of age. She was buried in the Crookston cemetery on Monday. The monthly meeting of the Tapanui Borough Council was held on Monday evening, January 11. The Commissioner of Transport wrote asking that the council forward a copy of all legal restrictions of speed and weight which should be taken into account by transport licensing authorities. A copy of the borough by-laws is to be forwarded by the clerk. An application was received from Mrs K. Casey for permission to attach a signboard projecting three feet with “tea rooms” printed therein to the front of her premises in Northumberland street. The request was granted. Tire Mayor (on behalf of Councillor Varcoe) read the Works’ Committee’s report. The work authorized by the council at last meeting had been carried out. Two men did necessary work at the cemetery. The drain through Mr D. Keir’s property had been attended to. The following work was recommended for the next month: Cleaning water channel, trimming footpaths and making a drain on the lower side of Bedford street, putting in drain pipes to carry surplus of water from Bedford street into the drain in Forrest street, cleaning out 'water channel in Forrest street, and taking away mounds, and having long grass cut in many places. The report was adopted. It rvps decided to call for tenders to concrete about 10 chains of footpath in Northumberland street, seven feet wide, and three inches deep. The clerk’s report showed a credit-balance in the bank of £239 15/11, which should be augumented by rates and sundry acounts to about £361. There should be a balance of £lOO for permanent improvements after deducting expenditure for the remainder of the year. The Tapanui sub-branch of the Plunket Society met on Friday afternoon. The president, Mrs J. H. White, was in the chair and there was a good attendance. The secretary was instructed to forward the local subsidy to Heriot, and to publish the subscription lists. The annual meeting of , the society will be held in April.
