NIGHTCAPS NOTES

TOWN BOARD MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Nightcaps Town Board was held on Monday evening and was attended by the following: Commissioners Excel (chairman), E. Cosgriff, E. Mason, A. Prendeville, F. Boyle and T. Thomson. Mt A. Malcolm drew attention to the state of the boundary fence on Johnson Road.—Left to works committee to inspect. Messrs M. and J. Dixon applied for work to be done to drainage system fronting their property on Sinclair Avenue. —Surfacemen to attend to it.

George Hyde made application to remove hut from Annan street. —Granted subject to usual conditions. The Main Highways Board drew attention to the need for the strictest economy and that sanction for all work was required before being proceeded with. The £3 for £1 sub-maintenance subsidy estimates forwarded in September had been curtailed by one-quarter; the board was asked to forward particulars of expenditure estimated till March 31.—Clerk to forward estimates.

The Unemployment Board advised the necessity of aU local bodies seeing that all men granted work were helping themselves by planting vegetables for their own use.— Referred to the Unemployment Committee. Most of the local men are attending to their gardens.

Mr B. Pointon forwarded plans for a billiards room to be <erccted fronting Johnstone Road. —Permit to build was granted subject to necessaiy subdivision being made. The Clerk was instructed to sell the debentures for the Coronation Hall heating and talkie installation loan.

Tenders for gorse cutting on Mr P. MeAnelly’s section were referred to Mr Austin, Invercargill. Tennis.

The third round of the men’s singles championship was reached on Saturday, the following still remaining in, Burgess, Cosgriff, Grant, Kennedy. Burgess and Johnson played a three set match, Burgess eventually wearing Johnson down and running out winner at 7 —6, 6—7, 7—2. Burgess owed his win more to his ability in returning Johnson’s chopped drives, than to any specially- good play, though both played fair tennis at times, Johnson playing the more aggressive tennis. On Sunday’, favoured by glorious weather, a fair number of people visited Colac for the district railway excursion. The Nightcaps Silver Band, conducted by Mr J. Currie, dispensed a varied programme of music during the day’ which was much appreciated. Numbers of others visited the Jacob River at Opio by bus and car and spent the day picnicking on its banks, swimming being indulged in by many of the younger people. Ideal weather prevailed on Saturday, and bowling, tennis, golf and cricket all had a good following. Personal. Mrs D. McKenzie is visiting Dunedin and Oamaru. Mr and Mrs McGregor and family, of Dunedin, who have been spending a month’s holiday at AVrey’s Bush are returning to Dunedin to-morrow. Mrs A. H. Newton, Invercargill, is the guest of Mrs Webb. Mrs Kelly, Invercargill, is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Flynn. Miss Whittock, Gore, is the guest of Mr and Mrs B. Rushton Mr J. Neylon is visiting his sister in Dunedin. Mr J. Erasmuson, Bluff, is the guest of Mr and Mrs F. Erasmuson. Masters W. and E. Boyle are spending the holidays at Gore.
