The light rain which drove from the south-west for a considerable period of Monday afternoon did not deter bowlers from participation in the sixth round of the rinks championship, says the Christchurch Times. The first and only really heavy fall was experienced just before the finish of the morning’s play, and the last few :

heads were decided under conditions that would have deterred any bowler not engaged in a championship contest.

M. Walker (Auckland) is two points ahead in his section and, playing on the St Albans green on Monday, he defeated J. H. Hayward (St. Albans) and J. Wyber (Spreydon) by fourteen and eleven respectively. P. A. Buck (Imperial) who had been in second place to Walker at the week-end, lost both his games, but F. Laur, enson (Linwood), E. AV. Bartlett (Elmwood) and L. Arnott (Palmerston North) won both theirs, and are now runners-up to the well-known Auckland skip. J. Hutchison Loses. The sixth round broke the run of successes of J. Hutchison (Dunedin). He went down by ten to the Sumner rink, which, at first skipped by AV. J. Hampton, is now controlled by J. S. Martin, owing to Hampton’s withdrawal through indisposition. Playing on the Christchurch green Hutchison led Martin for the first dozen heads, after which Martin had much the better of the game. Both rinks played good bowls, but Martin repeatedly scored. Though the green was on the heavy side the game was a good drawing one, with the play more even than the final score would suggest. Hutchison still leads the section with five wins, and as runners-up he has Hampton’s Sumner rink and N. Murray’s Fitzroy team. W. Bremner (West End, Auckland) had the solo leadership of his section at the end of Saturday’s play’. On Monday morning he met P. Skoglund (Stratford) and lost by one in a great contest decided only on the last head. Bremner accounted for J. Tonkin (North-East Valley) by eleven in the sixth round, but Skoglund also triumphed over N. Burgess (Opawa), leaving the two level with five wins, Deare Still Ahead. Three rinks are on level terms at the head of Section B. They are, J. Dick (Ashburton), W. G. Ives (Canterbury) and E., Wilson (St. Kilda), all of whom won both their games on Monday’. They therefore lead, by two wins, F. D. Muirson (New Brighton), J. N. Du Feu (St. Albans) and M. J. Casey (Thorndon), who, having been level with the present leaders at the end of Saturday’s play, were defeated twice on Monday. G. A. Deare (Dunedin) heads four run-ners-up in his section. He has had only one defeat, to J. Moyes (West End, Timaru). In a high scoring game of 37 to 24, AV. Raphael (Canterbury) one of Deare’s runners-up, defeated D. Martin (Frankton Junction) in the sixth round. Ramsay’s First Defeat. AV. D. Ramsay (Shirley) suffered his first defeat at the hands of J. Findlay’s j Mount Eden rink, who, in a great game in which several heads were burnt, won by’ two in the sixth round. Ramsay still heads his section, but only one point behind him are Findlay, H. J. West (Edgeware) and E. Bandy (Papanui). The two last-named had a great struggle in the sixth round which West won by two. A. E. Hodge (Awamoa) has improved his position as a result of Monday’s play, at the beginning of which he was on level terms with St. G. Atkinson (United), W. H. Coombes (Sydenham), Dr. R. Noble Adams (Blenheim) and J. Burgess (Riccarton Racecourse). Hodge, by winning both games, is one point ahead of Atkinson, Adams and Burgess. One of the three skins whose rinks are still undefeated is T. Gray (Kelburn), who has with him Williams, McColm and Routley. Gray had two substantial wins on Monday by sixteen and ten respectively. H. Wilson (Linwood) has brought his rink into second place by winning twice, against C. E. Tyrell (Roslyn) and F. East (Edge ware). Foster Goes Down. W. Foster (Caledonian) suffered his first defeat on Monday morning at the hands of W. R. Sprosen (Linwood), who won by eighteen. Sprosen, however, went down before Dr Orchard’s Christchurch rink in the sixth round, in which Foster won against C. Madsen (Sydenham). This win placed Foster second only to J. Calder (Phoenix) who has six wins to his credit. In that section P. L. Davies (Canterbury) had his first win against E. Monk (Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club).

Through gaining only one win on Monday L. A. Gordon (Canterbury’) lost his solo leadership of Section J. He is no»y level with W. T. Goodwin (Thorndon) and T. Edwards (Temuka). The two lastnamed won both the fifth, and the sixth rounds.
