Mr W. T. Hazlett left Invercargill on Monday for Wellington. Mr Donald Macdonald, of Edendale, left by yesterday morning’s express on his way to Wellington. Mr A. B. Moffett travelled from Invercargill to Dunedin by the express yesterday morning.
Mr W. J. Currie, of Wyndham, left by yesterday morning’? express on route to Wellington.
Mr A. Ibbotson, of Dunedin, arrived in Invercargill by the express last evening and is a guest at the Grand Hotel.
Mr H. M. Thompson, of Wellington, arrived in Invercargill by last evening’s express and is staying at the Grand Hotel.
Messrs J. N. and R. A. Lauson, of Karitane, arrived in Invercargill by car yesterday and are staying at the Grand Hotel. Miss Jean Currow, of Tuatapere, left Invercargill by yesterday afternoon’s express on the first stage of a trip to Australia.
Mr David McDougall, M.P. for Mataura, paid a short visit to Invercargill yesterday, returning to Gore by the afternoon’s express.
Dr. A. Kidd, medical superintendent at the Waipiata Sanatorium, arrived in Invercargill yesterday and is a guest at the Grand Hotel.
A Press Association message from London announces the death of the Rev. H. M. Dauncey, who for 40 years was a missionary in Papua. The Rev. J. T. Paddison, who has been visiting Invercargill as the guest of Canon J. A. Lush, returned to Gore by. yesterday afternoon’s express. Mr D. L. Cumberbeach, district supervisor of the New Zealand Government National Provident Fund, arrived in Invercargill by yesterday afternoon’s express.
Mr R. B. Tennent, the Department of Agriculture’s field instructor for Otago and Southland, arrived in Invercargill from Dunedin by yesterday afternoon’s express. The Rev. H. C. Orchard, of Balclutha, who, accompanied by Mrs Orchard and family, has been touring by motor car through the southern portion of Southland, expects to return home at the week-end. Advice was received in Cromwell last week of the death in Christchurch of a very early resident of the town, Mrs W. T. Ward (whose maiden name was Goodyer), whose husband predeceased her some years ago. The late Mr Ward was one of the early postmasters in the town. Mr T. A. Buckingham, who has been indisposed for some months, was again present at the monthly meeting of the Southland Electric Power Board yesterday morning. A welcome was extended to him by the members, and Mr A. A. Mac Gibbon expressed pleasure at Mr Buckingham’s restoration to health.
The death occurred at Masterton on Sunday of Mr Cyril Scandrett, fourth son of the’ late Mr W. B. Scandrett and a brother of Mr D. M. Scandrett, of this city. The late Mr Scandrett was well-known in Invercargill 20 years ago up till the time he joined the Department of Agriculture During his period of service with the department he was stationed in various parts of the North Island and at the time of hrs death he was meat inspector at the freezing works at Mnsterton.
Sergeant J. J. Hogan, of Wellington South Police Station, retired on Friday on superannuation after 42 years service. He joined the permanent artillery in 1890, and was transferred to the Police Department in 1892, doing duty in Dunedin and Christchurch. He was later transferred, as a sergeant, to Auckland, where he remained for two years, after which he was transferred to Hastings as sergeant-in-chargc. He was stationed there for about 18 years, and then went to Rotorua in a similar capacity. After two years and a half in that town Sergeant Hogan was transferred to Wellington South, taking up his duties there early last year.
