EVENING SPORTS

FIXTURE AT DRUMMOND A RECORD'MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) In ideal weather on Saturday evening, the third evening sports programme of amateur events, held at Drummond under the auspices of the Drummond Amateur Cycling Club, proved an unqualified suw cess. The perfect conditions that prevailed no doubt induced a good number of patrons to come out of doors and the attendance, which was close on 400, was a record as far as the club was concerned.

A start was made at 6.30 sharp and practically the whole of the long and varied programme was put through before dusk. The entries for the cycling events were numerically, strong, and a record was also constituted in this part of the programme when the entries surpassed all previous fields at similar meetings of the (flub. The 440 yards cycling track was in fairly good order, and some stirring events were witnessed, during which fast times were recorded. Field events were also decided, and interest was not lacking at any part of the evening. The officials had an arduous task, but their work was carried out efficiently and promptly. Mr A. Paul, the energetic secretary of the club, was responsible for some good work.

In the cycling section the one mile novice handicap went to an Invercargill rider—R. Blue, who was awarded the decision from a club-mate, Elliott, by trie narrowest of margins. The open events were responsible for keen and interesting riding. A new rider who revealed unusual promise was the winner of the half-mile handicap, Browning (Otautau). After winning his heat in record time off a 50 yards mark, he did not make any mistake in the final, which he won impressively from C. Buxton. The mile open handicap with 20 entrants was run in two heats. Another newcomer was to the fore in this event, when C. King, off the limit (100 yards), won the final from end to end. The two miles handicap, which attracted a field ol 17, was the best race of the evening. The Winton rider A. Hagerty, after winning his heat by a narrow margin off scratch, led the field home in the final after giving a fine exhibition. Excellent trophies were given in all instances. No serious mishaps occurred to mar the pleasure of the evening, although two riders came to grief. At a bend at the conclusion of the first round of the first heat of the half mile Dillon came off, but was not injured, although his cycle was damaged. Bailey was unlucky in the same heat of the half-mile, for while leading the field by a good margin into the straight he also fell. Unusual interest was evinced in the tug-of-war, for which five entries from district teams were received. In most cases the strength of youth outclassed the age and weight of their opponents. The final saw a team representing Town awarded the decision after a sterling contest with a Spar Bush team. Pillow fighting also proved a popular pastime. Sack races for both boys and girls were also well patronized. The evening’s results were as follows: ONE MILE NOVICE HANDICAP (9 entries). —R. Blue (Invercargill) 1, Elliott (Invercargill) 2, King 3. Time, 2min 57sec. The Invercar" : ll pair Blue and Elliott took charge at the commencement of the final round, and these two fought out the finish. King went out at the start of the concluding round, but the scratch man, Hagerty, went to the front before half the round was completed. Other events.—Pillow Fight (15 entries) : McNaught 1, D. Lindsay 2. Tug-of-war (5 entries) : Town 1, Spar Bush 2. WINTON CYCLING CLUB EVENING SPORTS ON THURSDAY. The Winton Amateur Cycling Club’s sports ,which were scheduled to take place last Thursday evening and were later postponed until to-morrow (Tuesday) evening have been now postponed until next Thursday evening. The reason given for the second postponement is that an amateur meeting is being held at Wyndham on Tuesday evening.
