The Commonwealth and Dominion Line vessel Port Melbourne arrived at, Bluff from Newcastle on Saturday morning to load Southland products for the Home market. During her stay in Australian ports exceptionally hot weather was experienced—especially at Townsville (Queensland) where the mercury reached a dizzy level in the recent heat wave. It was not until three days off New Zealand that cooler conditions were met with and white ’’ducks” discarded in favour of heavier uniforms by her personnel. For some, time before leaving England the Port Melbourne was laid up at Blackwater, Essex, and when the time was approaching for her departure a fire broke out on board, the after promenade and boat decks and new engineers’ quarters being destroyed. As the engines were not running, no pumps for fire-fighting were available and water for that purpose had to be drawn by hand. There were few on board at the time, but. a quartette composed of the chief and second officers, third engineer and chief steward tackled the work and after twelve strenuous hours the outbreak was subdued. The Port Melbourne was taken to Newcastle-on-Tync for repairs and it was found necessary to take out the freezer engines for reconditioning, two months elapsing before the vessel finally left the repairers' hands. The voyage to Australia occupied only 35 days, the Port Melbourne steaming 15 knots. The run was accomplished in beautiful weather conditions. At Cape Town a brief stay' of four hours was made to enable passengers to go ashore. Christmas Day was spent between Sydney and Melbourne and was fittingly celebrated in the gastronomic line as is shown by the menu: Prawns in Aspic. Grape fruit cocktail. Consomme Royal. Crumbed Fillets Halibut. Asperges Vinaigrette. Filet Beuf. Macedoine. Braized Cumberland Ham. Roast shoulder N.Z. Lamb. Mint Sauce. Braized English Turkey. Loganberry Sauce. Boiled, Browned and Duchess potatoes. Dressed Cape cabbage. French beans. Choice of cold viands. Melbourne salad. Christmas pudding. Brandy sauce. Star of Victoria Sundae. 1931 Yule log de luxe—Mince pies. Dessert. Tea Coffee. It goes without stressing that the day was enjoyed by the epicures on board. Amongst the cargo taken in at Townsville for England were 2000 tons of sugar, and 700 tons of lead, while 600 bales of wool were also shipped. Her quantities from Bluff include about 30,000 carcasses of frozen lamb, 5000 crates of cheese, 3000 boxes of butter and a quantity of sundries. The Port Melbourne is expected to complete at this port on Tuesday night and to sail about midnight for Port Chalmers, Picton, Wellington, Gisborne and Auckland in continuation of Homeward loading.
