CATTLE FLAT MEETING, A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. KEEN SPORT WITNESSED. CUP TO SPANISH MAID. The Cattle Flat Hack Handicap races held yesterday was one of the most successful fixtures held by the club for a number of years. The acceptances constituted a record and with good fields contesting each event the racing was keen and interesting throughout. Favoured by fine weather, the attendance was excellent and despite the fact that admission charges were reduced in order to meet the changed conditions, the gate receipts amounted to approximately £50 —a slight increase over last year. The meeting was also ably controlled and the programme of seven events was concluded in good time —a fact greatly appreciated by visitors from outside districts. During the meeting there were no outward incidents and the services of the judical committee were not required. The decisions of the judge, Mr M. Hickey, were not called into question while the starting ot Mr J. Hood also met with general satisfaction. Credit for the smooth working of the fixture is also due to the president, Mr J. Hood and to the secretary, Mr W. Asher together with the band of honorary officials who were keen to make the meeting a success. A pleasant feature of the gathering was the large number of families, who spent the day in picnic fashion. This is so each year and yesterday the conditions for such an outing were ideal. The Nightcaps Brass Band and the Balfour Pipe Band were in attendance and during the afternoon played a number of enjoyable selections. The principal event the Cattle Flat Cup was won by Mr P. G. Ross’ Spanish Maid and his success and that of his trainer was a popular one. In presenting Mr Pollock with the trophy, the president, Mr Hood, congratulated him upon his win and mentioned that he had been a good supporter of the club. Mr Hood ako stated that next year the club would be on its new ground and a gold mounted whip would be presented to the winning riders in the first trotting and galloping events. Trainer Pollock came in for a great round of applause and in reply thanked the president for his kind remarks. The results were as follows: HANDICAP HURDLE RACE, £l7. One mile and a half. J. Hoods Glenboa, ch g, aged 9.0 (L. Hunt) 1 W. Campbell’s, Pantier, ch g aged, 9.7 (C. Lowe) 2 J. Langford’s Bandy Boa, 9.0 (V. Langford) 3 Also started: Tunamoe 10.12 (J. Dempster) ; Balvasco 9.4 (L. TOURNAMENT AT QUEENSTOWN. The Christmas bowling tournament at Queenstown attracted an unprecedentedly large number of bowlers. The majority were regular visitors and there were many new faces. Dunedin and Invercargill clubs were fully represented and there were bowlers from other centres, including Oamaru. Among those present were D. Campbell, twice champion of Otago and once in Southland; F. Lambeth, a former New Zealand champion, and W. Thorn, a prominent Southland bowler. Heavy rain fell on Christmas morning and the Christmas Day tourney hail to be abandoned. The weather was beautifully fine on Boxing Day with the result that there was a full green of players, 64 in all. Several had to stand down. The green was in excellent order, although somewhat heavy in the morning. The standard of play was of a very high order and some close finishes resulted. W. Thorn’s rink was the winner for the day.
