SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED.

Nominations for the Wairio Jockey Cub’s Annual fixture are due at 5 o’clock to-night.

Acceptances for the first day of the Southland R.C.’s Summer meeting close to-morrow evening.

Dazzling Eyes may go to the Vincent J.C. fixture with her stablemates, Consono and Milliner.

The Summer Cup (ten furlongs) will be the leading event at the Auckland R.C. races to-day.

Winton Trotting Club’s Annual gathering takes place on the W.R.C. s course tomorrow (Wednesday).

At the Auckland meeting on Saturday, 11. Gray rode three winners and piloted two second gallopers.

Great Northern Eoal Stakes (two-year-olds) winner, Inflation, was trained by Mrs Alan McDonald (P.N.).

Over a third of a century represented Solmar’s price in winning at the Dunedin J.C.'s Summer races cn Saturday.

Chief Ruler's 17 representatives will be in demand at the N.Z. National Yearling Sales at Trenthara on January 21.

Mr W. J. Morland has won G.T.C.’s leading event four times—with Moneymaker, Lady Joan, Countryman, Gold Country.

The totalisator returns on Auckland Cup meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday showed a substantial decrease of £27,449.

His track work st Wingatui prior to Boxing Day heralded the success of Royal Saxon in the Otago Handicap (Um.)

Winning two-year-old filly Gold Paper, successful at Wingatui on Saturday, is a daughter of noted sire Paper Money.

Paper Money has thirteen representatives on the catalogue for the New Zealand National Yearling Sales in January.

The totalisator investments at the Manawatu Racing Club's fixture on Boxing Day displayed a marked shrinkage of £11,384.

Gold Country is an apparently consistent pacer and may race well at Winton although classed back to 48yds behind.

The Auckland Trotting Club’s Summer meeting will be continued to-morrow (Wednesday) and conclude on Thursday afternoon.

The Gore Trotting Club probably lost money on Saturday’s fixture, but the minor shortage expected was worth the sport presented.

Riccarton two-year-old, Delice, picked up a nail after reaching Auckland, but the mishap was not a serious one in view of the future.

Placed second for interference after winning last season and genuinely second on Saturday, Gay Crest has been unfortunate in the Auckland Cup event.

Meprisant, who beat Southlander King Balboa at Wingatui yesterday, is a better galloper than is generally realized by the general public.

Provided his gallop in the Auckland Cup has not knocked him out temporarily, Great Star may display improved form at the big Ellerslie fixture.'

Shatter was apparently unsighted at Auckland on Boxing Day, but the tall Shambles gelding will probably be heard from later in his career.

With the purchase of the Campton Park Stud and the addition of his own sires and mares, Lord Glanely will now own the largest breeding establishment in England.

In the event of Phar Lap getting away safely on his American venture to-day, H. Telford may stay in New Zealand to attend the National Yearling Sales at Trentham.

It is interesting to record the fact that the time record for the Auckland Cup, 3.24 3-5, is held jointly by two South Islanders, viz. Admiral Drake (Otago) and Rapier (Canterbury;.

There was a serious decrease in the investments on the opening day of tne Auckland Trotting Club’s Summer fixture yesterday, the shrinkage amounting to aboui £19,250.

It is understood that I he Dunedin Jockey Club had a successful financial experience on Saturday and that the Summer fixture which closed yesterday will return a profit.

The veteran Christchurch owner trainer, Mr F. Holmes, who has returned to his first love—the galloping game —won the Christmas Handicap at. Westland R.C. meeting on Saturday with Arrowmaid.

Lack's downfall in the Great Northern Foal Stakes would prove expensive to his admirers after his Wellington and Riccarton triumphs, but six furlongs evidently proved beyond him.

While he failed to get into the money in the Auckland Cup, Jaloux evidently ran a good race, as he finished well up in fifth place, a performance worth noting in a fast contest.

Judging from recent reports, Riccarton sportsman, Mr F. Holmes intends to leave the light harness sport to his sons as an active pursuit, while he returns to the racing of thoroughbreds.

Southland-bred pacer, Black Lion, is reported to have put up a brilliant display in the Boxing Day Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, when he finished fourth after serious interference al the start.

The three year-old pacer, Gold Paper, who is racing in Auckland this week, is a half-brother by Rey de Oro to the Auckland Trotting Cup winner of yesterday, Royal Silk, by Silk Thread—Glimpse.

The descendants of the Canterburyowned sire, Paper Money, have long been noted for early speed, and it would appear that the Great Northern Foal Stakes winner, Inflation, has to be added to the number and classed as one of the best of the tribe. The youngster prepared by Mrs McDonald has raced prominently this season and can now claim a record of five successes and one third placing. He is bred for speed, as, in addition to his descent from Paper Money, his dam Fleeting, was got by Boniform—Snowstell (sister to Fleetfoot), by Clanranald—Safeguard, by Maxim—Teredo, by Apremont—Nautilus. The Auckland G.N. Foal Stakes winner is, therefore, bred to gallop fast on both sides of his family table and he also sports two distinct infusions of Musket blood through Boniform and Maxim, and this fact suggests stoutness added to fast galloping lines.

It is understood that the Dunedin owner, Mr J. M. Samson, was not present at Ellerslie to see his representative, Admiral Drake, prevail in the Auckland Cup. He iil at present an inmate of a private hospital in Otago’s capital, and he may have to undergo a minor operation to one of his feet.

When Riri won the Trial Stakes at the Dunedin J.C. Summer meeting on Saturday the brother to Chide notched his first successful public performance. There has been a tendency for some time past to boom the son of Paladin—Reproachful, by Bonny Glen —Lady Disdain, by The Officer, as a potential champion, but he is hardly likely to fill the bill, although he may win

fair handicap events. To the writer’s idea, after watching the horses trained at Riccarton by G. Murray Aynsley for some time, Meprisant is more promising than Riri where class is concerned, but time will tell.

The win scored by Admiral Drake in the Auckland Cup was a very meritorious effort (remarks Christchurch Times, as he came away in good style at the business end of the journey. He was bred by Mr Frank Armstrong, a popular Hawkes Bay sportsman, and is by Chief Ruler from Tame Duck, an English importation by Earia Mor from Duckshot, by Gallinule. He has done a lot of racing, and ho appears to thrive on it. He showed good form when in the colours of his oreeder, but last January he was purchased by the Dunedin owner, Mr J. M. Samscn, for whom he ran third in the Consolation Handicap on the concluding day of the Wellington Cup meeting. On being transferred to the south he failed to show any form, and after four runs in the autumn he was gelded. He came back this season a much improved horse. After winning at the Dunedin meeting in September he captured the Kurow Cup and then went on to Trentham to annex the Wellington Handicap, in which he beat a good field over a mile and three furlongs. Up io this stage his stamina had been tkiubted, partly because of his sire, Chief River, h'ri his success at Trentham caused opinions to be revised, and he demonstrated that he could stay by running second to Spearful in th? New Zealand Cup. His late, form at Riccarton was not so good, our C. Gieseler freshened him up, and was able to produce him at his best on Saturday, when he registered his best performance. He will have to carry heavier weights in future, but they will not prevent him from winning more races. The success of Ad miral Drake would be popular in all parts of the Dominion. His owner, Mr J. M. Samson, is one of the most liberal supporters of racing in New Zealand, and he deserves all the good fortune that comes his way. CANTERBURY NEWS. TRAINERS OUT OF LUCK. CONVOY IN SLINGS. TROTTING AT ASHBURTON. SOME KEEN RACING. (Special to the Times.) Christchurch, December 26. We have had a few light showers of rain during the week, they were not heavy enough to lay the dust let alone give the tracks a soaking. Training operations are at a standstill at Riccarton and will be for a few weeks'. T. H. Gillett arrived home on Friday with Gustavo. He reports that the Solferino horse made all his own running at Dannevirke and was never troubled. He was surprised to see him so lame in front as he returned to the birdcage. The trouble is high up. If this lameness does not disappear in the course of a few days Gillett will send Gustavo up to Mr J. R. McKenzie’s stud farm at Yaldhurst for a spell. F. Christmas is another Riccarton trainer that is having a bad run of luck. One day this week Convoy fractured his near fore fetlock joint. An endeavour is being made to save the gelding. His fetlock has been put into plaster and he is in slings at his trainer’s place. Convoy having broken a leg, Christmas decided that it was not worth while doing the Otago and Southland circuit, so he pulled Red Heckle out of his engagaments. He will have Minerval racing on the West Coast, that gelding having been taken across with Mrs J. Campbell’s horses. 11. Nurse was forced to decide against Palace doing the Southland trip. The speedy gelding has been troubled with a slight lameness for some time. A splint appeared and the lameness became worse so a trip south for him was abandoned. This reduced Nurse’s original team of Charmeuse, Palace and Ringing Cheer to one. He went South with the mare on Wednesday. Night March is back at A. McAulay’s and is a regular attendant on the tracks. He is a picture and on looks is as sound as a bell. Having been exercised every day while at Gladstone Lodge, he is much more forward than is generally supposed and it will not take much work to get him fit to race. In fact he would run a very merry half-mile now. Ashburton Trotting Meeting. The Mitcham Handicap for slow class trotters was a poor spectacle. So many of them broke up at the start that at the end of half a mile Fairyland and Guy Carbine were out by themselves one hundred yards clear of First Wrack who was out from the rest. With half a mile to go First Wrack had run up behind the two leaders and when Fairyland broke entering the straight she ran past Guy Carbine and soon had a big lead of the big horse. She won pulling up by a length from him with Fairyland sixty yards away, just beating Esbine and Great Burton for third place. After these there was a big gap. The winner looked greatly improved and trotted as if she was.

The Advance Handicap was a really fine contest. On Parade, Fairhead, Tatsy De Oro, Rare Pronto, Warbird, and Midnight Sun were in a heap all up the back and they came into the straight in a heap, Tatsy Do Oro having a slight advantage of the colt. Once into the straight Rare Pronto took charge and looked a winner, but On Parade stuck to his work in a highly commendable manner, and got to her again with Tatsy De Oro, Warbird, Arion Axworthy and Midnight Sun also putting in claims. In a battling finish, Tatsy De Oro beat Midnight Sun by a neck, with On Parade a head away a neck in front of Rare Pronto, Warbird a neck further back was half a length ahead of tho imported Arion Axworthy, who would have troubled the winner but for running very green all up the long straight. The Ashburton Trotting Cup Handicap was a grand race. The betting denoted that their connections were confident in the capabilities of their respective horses, and their confidence was not misplaced. Pageant and King Pointer were rather slow on to their feet and lost a considerable amount of ground while Red Shadow lost about a second. Milo Minto, pulling hard, led from Rollo and Avenger, with Sunny Bob and Warplane together next, the whole lot being bunched the last pair being Pageant and Carmel. The first mile was mn in 2.20 2-5 then it improved, but the order was practically the same, only in closer order. Half way up the straight Red Shadow shot across the field to the rails and looked to have the race won, but, when Warplane threw out a challenge he collapsed and Warplane went on to win well by nearly a length from Arethusa who finished at a great clip. Red Shadow was a neck away third, a head in front of Regal Voyage. Free Advice was fifth and Milo Minto sixth. Belinda was withdrawn owing to having turned a somersault at Addington a few mornings ago. She is a very doubtful starter at Canterbury Park meeting. Some Guy was backed down to a short price for the McLean Handicap. He got a good run just behind the leaders all the way, but once Lily Bingen took charge of affairs he never looked capable of beating her. As a matter of fact he was lucky in beating Ron and Bracken who both lost a lot of ground through misbehaving at the start. They however did not lose as much ground as Tactless and Bell Axworthy, who were hopelessly left. In the Midsummer Handicap the favourite Royal Parade lost fully 60 yards at the start. Once under way he paced well and at the end of six furlongs he was within striking distance of the leader Colorado, but the effort to get there left him very little in reserve, certainly not enough to catch the leaders when they stepped the last mile in 2.12 2-5. The second favourite Harold Denver was always well placed. He headed off the early leader Colorado five furlongs from home, but when Oxford Queen and Lord Matchlight challenged him they were let take the lead but in the last furlong Harold Denver came again and beat Oxford Queen 1

by two lengths with Lord Matchlight half a length away. Glenville, Fleet Arrow, Compromise and Real Huon failed to go away properly and completely settled their prospects, while Royal Parade did well to finish a close fifth casing up. Manoeuvre was rather unlucky to get beaten by Accras in the Longbeach Handicap. She began well from the back mark but owing to a large number of horses leaving their feet and running all over the course she was badly interfered with and lost a lot of ground. Three furlongs from home she put in a great run and with one hundred yards to go she looked certain to catch Accras, but a chain from the judge’s box she tangled slightly and lost enough ground to be beaten by nearly two lengths. The early leader Peter Locanda again failed to stay, and Gay Gordon who beat him at Methven also failed in the last quarter of a mile. Claranda who finished third was beaten on his merits. He was always in the leading division. Harvest Time, Caligula, Raywood, Ruin and Tatsy de Oo all failed to go away properly. First Wrack’s win earlier in the day caused her to be penalised 12 yards behind in the Winslow Handicap. Beginning well she was running in behind the leaders Margaret Parrish and Great Harvester before long. Handled patiently she stayed where she was until well into the straight then she took charge and won easily from Esbine, who passed the post at a gallop clear of Great Burton who went a good race from 60 behind. The judicial committee held an enquiry into Esbine’s driver letting his mount gallop past the post and after questioning the driver no action was taken. Radley finished a fair fifth but was very tired. There was a long gap to the next horse. The start for the Boxing Day Handicap was not good. Black Lion and Arethusa were two of those that got away badly who ran great races. To get fourth Black Lion had to step his last mile on the outer in 2.6 4-5, and Arethusa went her last mile a shade better than 2.5. George Rey, was always well placed and he won all out from Steel All. He owed his win to being beautifully handled and the fact that Arethusa and Black Lion got away badly. DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB.
