SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED.

There will be no racing or trotting fixtures in New Zealand until Saturday, December 20.

Entries for the Vincent Jockey Clubs annual gathering (January 9, 11) close on Wednesday, December 23.

Acceptances for the Cattle Flat Hack meeting close at mid-day on the morning of the fixture.

Riverton R-C.’s cross-country events will attract northern owners during the Easter season.

The Australian Jockey Club’s Summer meeting opens at Randwick to-day and extends to Saturday next.

A. Stove, an apprentice in P. V. Mason’s stable, is expected to pilot Jaloux in the Auckland Cup race.

Owners are reminded that entries for the Wairio Jockey Club’s annual gathering are due on December 29.

On Tuesday evening next at 8 o clock acceptances for the Winton Trotting Club s Annual races are due.

In these days of reduced stakes, Riverton R.O.’s Easter prize list has been already considered in the north.

The Boxing Day rides of A. E. Ellis at Ellerslie will include Princess Bede, Supremacy and La Moderne (2yrs).

Champion pacer Harold Logan will probably compete at Canterbury Park T.C. meeting on January 1 and 2.

The leading event at the Australian J.C. meeting in Sydney to-day will be the Villiers Stakes, £750 (one mile).

The imported English pacer, Holly Bank, is to be tried out in Christchurch in future as a saddle racer.

In spite of recent seasoning racing, Gustavo may not be quite at his best for his Auckland Cup try out.

Owners are hardly likely to overlook Wyndham Racing Club acceptances closing on Wednesday of next week.

Wyndham R.C. flat racing re-handicaps, if any, will appear in the morning papers of Tuesday, December 29 .

If re-handicaps for Wyndham R.C. light harness races are necessary, they will bo declared on Thursday, December 31.

The turning point in a series of misfortunes is due the Dunedin Jockey Club on Saturday next and Monday (28th).

The handicaps for the Southland R.C. Summer fixture first day will keep Mr Pierce busy for December 29.

Quite a number of Southland-bred light harness horses will race at the Canterbury Park T.C. Summer meeting.

In the improving Pomp A. E. Ellis appears to have a very useful mount at the Auckland R.C. Summer fixture.

The Southland-bred filly, Lochlaggan, has been engaged in the open Flying Handicap, £l3O (6f.) at the Oamaru meeting.

The King’s Cup (IJm.) run in rotation in the Commonwealth States, will be decided this season on a Tasmanian course.

The crack West Coast square-trotting mare, Olive Nelson, may compete against the pacers at the Canterbury Park fixture.

George Delaney, at one time successful in Maoriland with De Gama, has been winning in Melbourne with his pupil Claude Duval.

It is stated that, when Rolls Royce won recently at Randwick his trainer (R. O’Donnell) and connections did not anticipate success.

Christchurch trotting mentor, J. S. Shaw, will produce Royal Silk and Peter Pirate at Auckland, also drive Betty Moko in the Rowe Cup.

The connections of the New Zealand Cup winner, Spearful, have been seeking a rider for the Manawatu Cup and E. Burgess may be on top.

Phar Lap will not be paraded at any of the North Island holiday meetings, as suggested, as he is to leave for America about December 29.

As Wingatui mentor C. Gieseler has a lengthy string engaged at southern holiday meetings, F. D. Jones may take Admiral Drake to Ellerslie.

A. Wilson, a Victorian lightweight, who is going to England to ride, may call in at Perth by the way to pilot Maorilander Stealth and other horses.

Peter Jackson is favoured for the Auckland Cup. His sire, Nigger Minstrel, was a brother to Desert Gold, and his dam, Left, by Martian, suggesting a stayer.

With a competent lightweight horseman available, it is on the cards that the exhack, Peter Jackson, will race well in Auckland Cup under a 7.0 minimum impost.

When interviewed on the subject this week, his trainer was unable to say who would replace L. J. Ellis as horseman to Admiral Drake in the Auckland Cup.

At the Woodville meeting the novice Gourmet, by Arausio, behaved badly, and, rearing over, injured A. E. Ellis’s back preventing him riding again at the fixture.

The Wanganui-owned gelding. Pomp, will not start in the A.R.C. Railway Handicap, but is expected to perform well in the Queen’s Plate (one mile) the same day.

Latest advice is to the effect that the N.Z. Oaks winner, Korokio, has recovered from recent seasonal troubles, and will be on hand to play her part at Auckland.

The Christchurch-trained pacers, Muriel de Oro and Edna Worthy, are to go north to take part in the Auckland Trotting Club’s Summer races on December 28, 30 and 31.

The win credited to Gustavo at Dannevirke on Wednesday was the first success to the brother of Count Cavour since October of last year, when he won at Wingatui.

Over-firm tracks in Southland for many weeks past have been causing trouble for local trainers and a number of home-bred young horses are giving cause for concern.

Irish-bred Aston, reported in top hole form of late in the North Island, is stated to be a big, long-striding gelding who gets over the ground smoothly and starts quickly.

Great interest has been aroused in home circles by the entry of The Smuggler for the Invercargill Cup and other open races. The big Balboa hack is looking well, but feeling the firm going.

Beacon Fire, who won a race on each day of the recent Woodville meeting, is a son of imported Lackham and traces back on his dam's side to Miss Kate (dam of Prince Warden, etc.).

In the list of handicaps published for the Speedwell Handicap (harness), class 2.56 (ljm.) at the Winton Trotting Club’s annual fixture, Slump, placed on 12yds, should be on the limit mark.

The younger brother to Tea Party, a. gelding now included in the string of F.

W. Ellis, has to be ranked as one of the boldest gallopers seen on the S.R.C. tracks as a novice for some time past.

P. McGrath, who acts as first lieutenant to Wingatui trainer, C. Gieseler, will be remembered by old time racing folk as one of the gamest and most danshing horsemen ever licensed in the South Island.

Hawkes Bay horses trained at Hastings and Greenmeadows won no less than seven races at the Woodville meeting recently, also running two seconds and three thirds —a nice two days’ record.

A Hawkes Bay Tribune writer states that the promising two-year-old colt, Pillow Fight, by Night Raid, was named prior to being purchased by Mr W. G. Stead at the last yearling sales at Trentham.

Gladstone Ixxlge private mentor, F. J. McKay, will probably turn out some winners for Mr W. T. Hazlett during the holiday fixtures, as he has Ruling Light, Irish Chieftain and Gold Ray well forward.

For some years coming and going between the centres named, D. Kemp has disposed of his residence and racing establishment at Hastings and has again returned to settle down among Woodville turfites.

It has been suggested that some of Weathervane’s early progeny were inclined to shirk racing issues, but this does not appear to be the case with his local representative, Red Sunset, who gallops on in courageous fashion.

Miss Lorraine, whose name suggests a stallion at one time in Southland, is a two-year-old filly by the imported English horse Diacquenod from the imported mare Tame Duck (dam of Admiral Drake).

Like Admiral Drake, by Chief Ruler, the filly Miss Lorraine, who unexpectedly won at the Waipa meeting last week, was bred by the well-known sportsman, Mr F. Armstrong. She had previously started twice unplaced.

Young Sentinel is not a favourite with early morning patrons of the S.R.C.’s tracks, but the son of Balboa, although a slow beginner, invariably hangs on grimly in his gallops and may some day confound the critics.

With sixteen in the Federal Handicap and twelve in the Otago Handicap, while the acceptances for the other events are equally satisfactory, ‘the first day’s racing of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Summer meeting promises to provide excellent sport.

It is interesting to note in connection with the leading event of the D.J.C. Summer meeting. Otago Handicap, £2OO (11m.) decided on Boxing Day, that of the thirteen horses handicapped, Night Parade was the only entrant to drop out on acceptance night.

Lightweight horseman A. H. Eastwood, will go north on Tuesday night to ride at. the Auckland R. C. Summer fixture, at the conclusion of which he will hurry south to fulfil engagements at Reefton on Jan. 8 and 9.

Riccarton owner-trainer J. 11. Prosser has departed for Ellerslie with Great Star and the three-year-old filly Grand Review, by Last Dart (imp.) from Bonsign. The latter has yet to display winning ability on the race course.

When P. V. Mason left Riccarton with his pupils Jaloux, Azalea, and Delice (2yrs) for Auckland, he also had Spoon under his charge, and the last-named will probably run well at A.R.C.’s headquarters.

Having concluded his first stud season Night March has returned to Riccarton from South Canterbury and occupies his old. quarters at A. McAulay’s stable. He will go into regular work again shortly.

The ex-Canterbury marc, Painkiller, by Shambles, was recently made the medium of a betting coup in Sydney. She led all the way and won over a mile at a pony meeting in 1.401 for experienced owner and trainer R. Skelton.

Jockey G. H. Humphries, at present under suspension, will resume riding at the Waikouaiti fixture on January 1. He will be present at Aamaru the following day, and will probably be present on the closing day of the Southland R. C. meeting.

The acceptance list for the Auckland Trotting Cup, which numbers off at twentyone, constitutes a record for the event. The early favourites, Red Shadow and Regal Voyage, having dropped out, Royal Silk is in keen demand.

The special correspondent of the Christchurch Times reports that at Auckland Racing Club headquarters on Thursday the hurdle racer, Master Clements, by Depredation, met with an accident and was destroyed.

At the conclusion of Wednesday’s racing at Dannevirke the winning trainers’ list was headed as follows:—T. George 13, A Tinker 11, Mrs A. McDonald 10, E. J. Ellis 9, A. Cook 9, D. P. Wilson 8, E. George 8, L. G. Morris 8, J. T. Jamieson 8, J. L. Gray 8.

The well-known reinsman, M. Holmes, will do a good deal of quick travelling during the Christmas and New Year holidays. He will be at Ashburton on Boxing Day and will leave that evening for Auckland, driving on the first two days of the meeting. Holmes will then return south and will drive on each day of the Canterbury Park meeting. He will leave on the following day for the West Coast. He will be driving at the Westland Trotting Club’s meeting on January 4, and on the two following days he will be at the Greymouth meeting.

The winning jockeys’ statement reads as follows: After the Dannevirke meeting this week: —H. Gray 39 wins, H. Wiggins 26, L. G. Morris 21, B. H. Morris 16, K. Voitre 16, S. Anderson 15, E. Keesing 14, R. Reed 14, L. J. Ellis 13, H. Stockley 12, A. Eastwood 9, G. Humphries 9, S. Cammick 9, T. Green 8, J. Dooley 8, J. Mcßae 8, W. Cooper 7, and A. E. Ellis 7.

Word has been received at the Kennington Stud from the well-known Canterbury breeder-owner, Mr H. A. Knight, that he Ls very pleased with two recent arrivals at his stud in the shape of colt foals by the Southland-owned imported English horse British Empire. The first colt is from Zaragoza (half-sister to Malaga, Urgency, Paquito and Taragona), by Nassau (imp.)—Madrid, by Vasco —Flame, ' by Phaeton—Catherine Wheel, by Maxim— Miss Kate (imp.). The second foal is son of Windshield (dam of Shatter, by Shambles), by Tractor (imp.)—Kilbreeze, by Kilbroney—Brisselette (imp.), by Picton. The breeding of the colts will interest and appeal to students of Stud Book and Turf Register history.

With reference to the list of nominations received for the Southland Racing Club’s Summer meeting the entry of Tres Bon should read Tray Bond (an inmate of J. R. McMurray’s Gore stable), while Merry Pearl has been substituted for Merry Peel (a novice from the establishment of E. J Ellis, the South Canterbury trainer).

At a Brisbane meeting last month there was only one five-shilling ticket on the flat enclosure totalisator on Lady Oaklands, winner of the Trial Handicap. The dividend for five shillings was nearly a century and a quarter sterling. The lucky punter was a Chinaman, who was escorted off the course by a policeman. Apparently it was considered too risky for the Celestial to remain on the track.

Karapoti, by his success in the Flying Handicap at the Waipa meeting (says the Waikato Times), convinced his connections and the racing public that he had again reached somewhere near the dashing form which marked his three-year-old career last season and which placed him at the head

of the list of Dominion stake winners with £5007. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES: THURSDAY’S CONDITIONS UNPLEASANT. PREPARING FOR HOLIDAY RACING. The conditions were unpleasant while the early workers were on the scene at Riccarton on Thursday morning (reports Christchurch Times), a fog making it difficult to see parts of the course. Fortunately, it cleared off about half an hour after proceedings opened. The work vas not of a particularly interesting character. None of the horses who were booked to leave at night for Auckland put in an appearance, while the abandonment of the Hororata meeting also had an effect. The number six grass track was open, but most of the trainers patronised the plough, which was the track used except when mentioned. Kakara and Muff occupied Imin 18sec for a spin over six furlongs. Riri and Meprisant covered a mile in Imin 45 3-ssec, finishing well. Winsome Hind registered Imin 17 2-5 sec for six furlongs, a performance which Babel equalled. These two are m excellent order. Ball Dress accompanied Sailor’s Love for six furlongs in Imin 19sec. .Solwit and Gasrange sprinted three furlongs in 39sec. Minerval and Elude ran six furlongs on the grass in Imin 18 2-ssec. Ramo, Royal Love and Honeycomb occupied Imin 47 l-sscc. for a mile, finishing together. Red Heckle and Convoy covered a mile in Imin 45 2-ssec. They were going well at the end. Charmeuse had Giggleswick for a mate over seven furlongs, which they disposed ot in Imin 30sec. Weatherly was given a working gallop over six furlongs. Red Royal and Countermarch registered 50 2-ssec for half a mile, a useful effort. Starshooter had Tautbow as a companion over the last part of a six-furlong spin, while Semper Paratus ran five furlongs alone, but they were not out for time. Balrazie jumped off in front of Ma Belle Polly and led throughout a six furlong spin, but they were going easily. Dutch Princess and the Shambles—Sweet Charity two-year-old sprinted three turlongs easily on the grass. A number of other horses did useful woi k. TOKANUI-FORTROSE HACK RACING CLUB. NO RACES THIS YEAR. The annual general meeting of members of the Tokanui-Fortrose Hack Racing Club was held at Tokanui on Thursday, the president, Mr 11. M. McLeod, presiding over a good attendance of members. The balance sheet showed a loss on the year of £29 2/8, leaving a credit balance of £42 17/3. It. was moved by Mr 11. M. McLeod and seconded by Mr A. McEwan Jnr., that no races be held this year. An amendment moved by Mr Conway, seconded by Mr J. Casey, that the race meeting be held as. usual was defeated by two votes. The principal cause of the deficiency was the concessions with the members’ tickets allowing of free admissions to the Club's entertainments, and members failing to pay their fees.
