VICE REGAL PARTY
TOUR OF ROTORUA DISTRICT.
LAND DEVELOPMENT SCHEMES
(Per United Press Association.)
Rotorua, December 17.
The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, Lady Bledisloe, with Sir Apirana Ngata and the Rarotongan Chief, Makea Tinerau, today commenced a private tour of inspection of a number of Maori land development schemes in the Rotorua district. Their Excellencies remain at Rotorua until Sunday, when they leave for Auckland to spend Christmas. Persistent rain made it necessary to curtail to-day’s programme, but the party visited the Horohoro Block, ten miles from Rotorua, where they inspected an extensive area being brought into cultivation by the Maoris. Lord Bledisloe officially opened the new Horohoro Native school and was extended the traditional Maori welcome by a large gathering of different sections of the Arawa tribe. The presentation of a handsome carved Maori casket to Lord Bledisloe and two splendid examples of Maori mat work to Lady Bledisloe was made by Sir Apirana Ngata.
