GENERAL NOTES. a The Union Company’s intercolonial freighter Waikouaiti is expected to leave Sydney on December 23 for Bluff direct. Due on the 28th, the vessel is to sail the same day for Dunedin, Timaru and Lyttelton. Leaving Lyttelton the vessel proceeds to Sydney direct. The Union Company’s freighter Waipiata is to leave Auckland on December 24 for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff. The vessel is due at Bluff on January 1 and sails on the 4th for Wellington and Auckland, via ports. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s Rangitane is due to arrive at Wellington on December 22. The vessel then proceeds to Bluff where she is due on January 4 to discharge and load for London. The National Mortgage and Agency Company advise that the Pakeha left Brisbane on Wednesday morning for Bluff, where she is due on Sunday evening to load meat, dairy produce and general cargo. The local agents hope to despatch the vessel on Tuesday for Lyttelton to continue loading. The Union Company’s Waiotapu left Newcastle on December 10 for Auckland, where she is to pay off and lay up indefinitely, owing to the slackness in the Pacific coast trade. The Blue Funnel Line motor ship Memnon arrived at Dunkirk on November 28, after a passage of 30 days from Melbourne, which is probably the fastest passage on record between these two ports. The Memnon has a big cargo of wool and general cargo to discharge at the United Kingdom and Continental ports. The local agents for the A. and A. Line advise that the new motor ship ilrdenvohr was scheduled to leave New York on Wednesday for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Wanganui. She will be followed by the City of Delhi on January 8 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, and the motor ship Australind on February 22 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. An increase in the volume of overseas and intercolonial shipping at the port of Auckland last month, in comparison with that in November, 1930, was reported to the Harbour Board on December 8 by the harbourmaster, Captain H. H. Sergeant. In overseas merchant shipping there was an increase of four vessels, representing 53,577 gross tons, and in intercolonial one vessel, representing 4546 gross tons. Coastal shipping in large vessels showed a decrease of three vessels, but an increase in tonnage of 54,646 gross tons. Local coastal shipping declined by 82 vessels representing 17,985 gross tons. The port was visited by 420 vessels, aggregating 408,057 gross tons and 245,503 net tons. “There is no truth whatever in the statement that the Canadian National Steamships intend to withdraw from the New Zealand trade.” This very definite intimation was cabled recently by the directors of Canadian National Steamships, Montreal. The cablegram is the outcome of the publication on December 7 of a report, from the Montreal Gazette, stating that the Canadian Government was preparing to discontinue the services of its mercantile marine and that it was understood that the New Zealand Shipping Company was to take over its service to this country. This report, as stated, is now given a flat contradiction, the Montreal paper evidently having been misinformed. The services of the line are to be continued as heretofore, the schedule of monthly sailings being maintained without alteration.
