SPORTS MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) Under ideal weather conditions the evening sports committee conducted ' a highly successful sports gathering in the recreations ground on Monday night when there was a very large attendance of the public present, amongst whom were visitors from Edendale, Gore and Wyndham. The programme, which was commenced promptly to scheduled time, was put through expeditiously and in all respects was regarded as the best yet held by this committee. The following are the results: RUNNING. 100 Yards: F. Thomson 1, 11. McKinnon 2, D. McCaughan 3. 220 Yards: N. Derbie 1, N. Forbes 2, D. Sutherland 3. 880 Yards: W. Archer 1, J. Scott 2. High Jump: B. Sutherland 1, L. Scott 2, R. Calder 3. CYCLING. Half Mile: A. Hoffman 1, K. Valentine 2, R. Blackburn 3. One Mile: A. Cushnie 1, K. Hoffman 2, T. Butler 3. Two Miles: R. Stewart 1, A- Redman 2, A. Hoffman 3. Amateur Two Miles: J. Forde 1, J. Kirby 2, A. McDonald 3. Tennis. The return tennis match Mataura v. Wait ano was played in beautiful weather at the later club’s courts on Saturday last and resulted in a win for the visitors by 7 sets 47 games to 1 set 24 games. The following are the results; Waitane names being mentioned first: — Combined Doubles: Duncan and Mrs Spriggs 4 v. Cullen and Mrs Maley 6; Lewis and Mrs Duncan 2 v. Brownsey and Miss Maley 6; Broad and Mrs Thompson 2 v. Alderson and Miss Redman 6; Osborne and Mrs Lewis 3 v. Alderson and Miss Richmond 6. Ladies’ Doubles: Mcsdames Spriggs and Duncan 1 v. Mis Maley and Miss Maley 6; Mcsdames Lewis and Thompson 1 V. Messrs Richmond and Redman 6. Men’s Doubles: Duncan and Lewis 6 V. Cullen and Brownsey 5; Broad and Osborne 5 v. Alderson and Alderson 6 Only one set of singles was played, but was not taken into account at the conclusion of the match. The Weather. The extremely hot weather now being experienced has permitted of farmers pushing along with their turnip sowing while on many sections adjacent to the town haymaking is in progress. Swimming is one of the principal sports at present, the river being a favourite place in the evenings. Attendances at the bowling green, tennis courts and cricket grounds have also greatly increased in the past few days. Annual School Sports. During the past five years the annual sports meeting of the Mataura School has usually been held on break-up day but on this occasion it was decided that the function be held on the Wednesday prior to the closing of the school. Accordingly there was a large gathering of parents and children in the Recreation grounds on Wednesday afternoon last when in ideal weather conditions the children made the most of their opportunities for the coveted sports honours. Amongst those present were Mr Thos Major (chairman and members of School Committee) Mr D. McDougall M.P., the Rev Robert and Mrs Mackie, the Rev David and- Mrs McNeur and Mr and Mrs John Buchanan (parents of the dux of the school, Hamish Buchanan). Congratulatory speeches on the completion of the year’s work were delivered by Mr Major and the Revs. Mackie and McNeur who exhorted them all to strive for the highest and best in life. The duty of presenting the dux of the school (Hamish Buchanan) with the gold medal donated by Dr. I. Woodhouse was entrusted to Mr 1). McDougall M.P., who congratulated the boy on his performance. He hoped that in later years he would look back 'on this (lay with pride and that this would be but the stepping stone to further distinction in his studies. Burgess 1, B. McEwing 2. On Tuesday last pupils of the Edendale Public School visited Mataura and were taken through the paper mills. The children evinced keen interest in the various operations required to produce the finidied article and their visit proved highly profitable as well as educational for them.
