GIRL FLYER’S PROJECT
ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA. EARLY ATTEMPT PLANNED. Advice has been received that Miss Jean Batten, daughter of Mr F. H. Batten, of Auckland, is contemplating a flight from England to Australia (states the New Zealand Herald). Miss Batten is a very accomplished airwoman and qualified at Stag Lane Aerodrome, London. She is the first New Zealand girl -to secure the British Air Ministry’s A license. She has also flown in New Zealand. Miss Batten, who is only 22 years of age, is small, graceful and very accomplished. She is a fine pianist and a talented dancer. Her brother, Mr Jahn Batten, appeared with much success in the British film, “Under the Greenwood Tree.” Those who know Miss Batten state that her outstanding qualities as a flyer are grit, determination and air sense in a marked degree. They have no doubt of her ability to undertake the task she has set herself. Miss Batten has not finalized her arrangements, but she has under offer a new machine built for Miss Amy Johnson for long-distance flights.
