SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED.

Dunedin J.C. Summer meeting first day acceptances are due to-morrow (Iriday) evening.

Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap acceptances are to close to-morrow night (December IS.)

Many calls for entries and acceptances' throughout Maoriland are to be met tomorrow night.

Pacer Actor is preparing at Addington for leading events at Gore and Winton £.C. meetings shortly.

Recovered from his Australian trip, Oratorian (7.7) reads well in the Wairarapa Cup, run over ten furlongs.

Compris is reported to have been off his feed at Woodville, but this lean gelding recovers very quickly.

Very large entries have been received for Greymouth Trotting Club gathering on January 5 and 6.

To-morrow may decide Great Star’s northern mission—Auckland Cup (2m.) or Railway Handicap (6f.)

W’ell tested over twelve furlongs, Gold Country should pace strongly in the Gore T.C.’s leading race of two miles.

Peter Jackson, who won at Waipa R.C, meeting on Saturday, figures in the Auckland Cup under 7.7.

Southland-bred pacer, Norman Fox (Nelson Bingen—Carbinea) was fifth in the Trial Stakes at New Brighton.

Four-year-old gelding Captain Dollar, by Paper Money—Piquant, has been shipped from Auckland to Sydney for sale.

Australian studmasters expect the autumn yearling sales to realize better results than was the case last year.

Costing loOgns. as a yearling at Trentham, the Woodville youngster winner, Gold Trial, descends on the dam’s side from Desert Gold.

One of Southland’s most aristocratic light harness matrons, Misfortune, recently produced her fifteenth foul—a colt.

Australia’s honoured jockey, R. Lewis, recently celebrated his 53 birthday—he has been noted in the saddle for about 39 years.

It is stated that hard trades in Hawke’s Bay have proved too much for the smart Railway Handicap entrant, Hunting Song.

In his lengthy and likely to continue career as a jockey, Victorian horseman, K. Lewis, has only once fallen foul of the powers that be.

1 nnce \ al, by \ alkyrian—Sports Queen, rs, is looked upon as a very promising northern Auckland Cup (2m.) candidate carrying 7.1.

Reported that two definite inquries have been made for youngster Pillow Hight, but Mr W. G. Stead will not sell the Night Raid colt.

Bunraven, Shatter and Juniper journey north to-day to represent the F. D. Jones stable at the Auckland R.C.’s Summer fix-

it is announced officially that the Waipa meeting winners, Peter Ja’ckson (Cup) and Karapoti and Leitrim (Railway) will not be penalized at Auckland.

Classed at Riccarton as a very smart sprinter, Great Star (7.7) may be reserved for the Railway Handicap, leaving A. Eastwood free fur Jaloux (7.1) in the Auckland Cup.

A consistent winner over middle distances, it will be interesting to see how All Smiles at 7.0 fares if started in the Wyndham Cup over ten furlongs.

The Awapuni lady trainer, Mrs A. McDonald, is expected to produce three very smart gallopers at Ellerslie, viz., Chief Cook, La Moderne and Inflation.

Three months’ suspension for alleged careless riding at Randwick is the only conviction standing against the Melbourne horseman, R. Lewis, over thirty-nine years.

Local trainer, R. McKay, has under his eare a very promising filly as yet untried on the tracks. She is a younger sister to Dazzling Eyes, by Woodend (imp.)

At the present juncture, Enwood (9.0) reads as a nice proposition for the Trial Plate Handicap at Wyndham, but several smart novices will rival her on the day.

A useful two-year-old last season, Con■voy, by Warplane Glenluce, and a brother to Red Heckle, may he hard to dispose of in the Wyndham Cup (l]m.), as well placed at 7.1.

While southern light harness people will be busy at, the Gore T.C. fixture on Boxing Day, the Ashburton T.C. will conduct a similar gathering attracting many crack performers.

The meeting of Warplane (scr), Red Shadow (12yds), Belinda (12yds) and King Pointer (48yds) in the Ashburton Trotting Cup Handicap, £5OO, class 4.30 (2m.) will provide keen northern interest.

Hjs admirers in Christchurch are not at till disconcerted by the failure of Gustavo at Woodville and fully expect him to put up a great fight in the Auckland Cup when asked to carry 8.0.

After watching Gustavo at work at Riccarton over an extended period recently, the writer would expert to learn that recent racing has improved him out of all knowledge.

Should the current drought prevail in Southland over the holiday season, there will be a number of southern pacers credited with tecords new to their past rating.

It is interesting to note that P. V. Mason’s pupil, Azalea, has been galloping well with Jaloux at Riccarton in view of an Auckland venture, as the Chief Ruler filly is of good class.

Following on satisfactory work at Wingatui, it is understood that Admiral Drake was to leave Dunedin yesterday on his way north to contest the Auckland Cup under a handy impost of 7.8.

The very encouraging total of 340 nominations has been announced for the Southland R.C.’s Summer meeting, compared with 365 entries last season, but there are seven races per day this season, as against eight last January.

A North Island report is to the effect that Gay Crest’s success in the Bolton Handicap at the Woodville meeting last week is not going to lead to a rehandican. The Riccarton candidate wil carry his original adjustment of 9.0 in the Auckland Cup.

The latest news regarding Eaglet is that she is an unlikely runner in the Auckland Cup. This is to be regretted, if correct, as this smart mare must have possessed a decided chance in the £2OOO event when set to carry) 7.1.

The fact that Black Duke and Channaine have been nominated for the Invercargill Cup suggests that the Otago and Southland representatives respectively will not be left in the Auckland Cup to-morrow night. Another Auckland Cup candidate, who

will not stand his ground in the leading A.R.C. handicap is Ephialtes. He has been galloping well at Trentham and is definite- 1 ly booked for the Manawatu Cup (1-Sm.) under J. W. Brady.

The fact that the entries for the Invercargill Cup number 23, as compared with 21 last season, is of decided interest, while it is also pleasing to note that a number of useful hacks have been engaged in the contest of January 2.

That smart galloper, Autopay, is reported to have been exhibiting mulish tendencies on the tracks at Trentham. At the same time, he is moving well when he elects to do his best, and is under orders to race at the Manawatu fixture.

With seven races per day, as against eight last season, it is not surprising that a decrease of 25 nominations is shown in the Southland R.C.’s Summer meeting entries —-there are 13 less in the flat events, and a shrinkage of 12 in the trots.

The attention of light harness owners and trainers is called to the fact that acceptances for the Gore Trotting Club’s Boxing Day meeting close with the secretary, Mr R. S. Green, at 5 p.m. to-morrow.

Mr McFarlane, the nominator of the string of Victorian trotters and pacers now visiting Auckland, is one of the most prominent owners of -trotters and pacers in Melbourne, and he took such a prominent part in the formation of the Trotting League, an organization which sought to have nonproprietary instead of proprietary clubs controlling the sport, that the biggest club in Melbourne last year once refused the entries of his horses. This action led to a boycott of the club’s meetings by certain members of the league, and for some time the league and the club were at loggerheads, but eventually the trouble was settled.

Wanganui turf experts can be credited with knowing their way about when it comes to discovering or certifying to the class of a galloper prepared on the tracks at the riverside city, hence it is interesting and instructive to learn that a smart two-year-old from one of the oldest racing centres of New Zealand is expected to display a bold front in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. The two-year-old in question is the filly Midinette bred and owned by Mr G. M. Currie and trained by W. Rayner. She was accompanied by a thoroughly tested galloper, viz., Pomp, when she set off from the five furlong post, the pair being on the move as they passed the mark, though it was not a real flying start. The Wanganui Chronicle continues: —“They left the initial furlong behind in 12sec dead, while the first quarter, always a very smart one on this track, took them 23 2-5 sec. At the three furlongs the watch registered 35 1-5 sec for the full journey. Neither of the pair was unduly pushed over the final stages and they appeared to be going so smoothly that an extra furlong would not have troubled -them. At the post, Midenette, who had a lighter weight in tite saddle than she will have to carry on Boxing Day, was nearly half a length in front of Pomp, who was ridden by V>. Reyner, trpiner of the pair. Included among the spectators were Midinette’s breeder and owner. Mr Currie, and the Koatanui stud groom, Mr J. Lowe. In the event of all going well in the meantime Midinette will be ridden in her Auckland classic engagement by 11. Wiggins. Thus she should be well served in the way of horsemanship.’’ It may be explained -that Wanganui’s youthful classic hojie is a daughter of Limond (imp.) from Motley, by Absurd—Pennon. by Coriander—Eulogy (imp.), by Cicero. Speed is strongly suggested in the makeup of Midinette, and she certainly conies from a great Maoriland galloping line on her dam s side —apart from the superlative excellence of her sire, Limond —as Pennon was bred to English time from Eulogy, then followed in order, Yurraldool. Humbug, Fulsome, Epitaph, Homage, Commendation, Eulatic, Pedestal and Praise. It is pleasing, therefore, to understand that Lack, Princess Bell, Delice, Prolvxo, and other speedy youngsters will not have matters all their own way in the Great Northern Foal Stakes race with Midinette in the field.

The prolific light harness dam, Misfortune has a handsome colt foal by Sungod at foot, at Mr W. Norman’s stud-form at Forest Hill. Although only a month old this voungster is a promising looking sort and his connections arc more than pleased with him. It is understood that Misfortune may again visit Sungod. As far as breeding goes this colt comes from the best of families, with Sungod as one of the outstanding sires in the province, and Misfortune as the dam of a number of standard performers. This latest arrival is her fifteenth foal—“ Stopwatch” (Winton). The foUowing is an interesting comparison of the entries received for the Southland Racing Club’s Summer meeting during the past and current seasons, the figures for the corresponding seven events of each fixture being quoted, is supplied by Mr J. E. Cuthill, secretary to the local club:— —First Day.—
