RAILWAY WORKERS
PROTEST AGAINST DISMISSAL. (Per United Press Association). Wellington, December 18. The following letter is addressed to Mr Walter Nash, M.P., by Mr Dawes, secretary of the Wellington branch of the A.S.R.S.: “The local branches of the Railways Tradesmen’s Association and the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants at tho Hutt workshops call upon the Government to bring pressure to bear upon the Railway Board to refrain from further dismissals. It is felt that a plan should be devised to enable the latest lot of dismissal notices, numbering about 40, to be withdrawn. Many of the men are of long service and all are highly qualified at their work. It is in the interests of the country that something should be done to retain their services. We trust you will do all in your power to assist us in this work. The Hon. J. G. Coates has just made an earnest appeal to employers asking them to avoid putting men off and the Railway Board has not set a good example.”
