BALFOUR NOTES

RAIN NEEDED. Despite the fact that neighbouring districts have had frequent beneficial rains, the pastures around Balfour are showing the effects of recent hot weather and need a thorough soaking. Farm work is well on but the lack of moisture is retarding growth. A number of farmers have postponed shearing operations until after Christmas in the hope of rain to renew the pastures by that time. Tennis Match. On Saturday afternoon the Balfour tennis team travelled to Wendonside to play their last game in the first round of tho Campbell Cup competition. The afternoon was ideal for tennis and some close games were played. The following are the detailed scores, with Balfour names given first:—Combined Doubles: Miss Grant and Macdonald 4 v. Miss A. McDonald and Sanson 7; Miss Wilson and Greer 7 v. Mrs Bunting and Heyes 6; Miss J. Grant and Jewiss 7 v. Mrs Heyes and Patterson 6; Miss McMath and Henderson 7 v. Miss L Patterson and Bunting 3. Balfour 11 sets, 109 games; Wendonside, 5 sets, 91 games. Presbyterian Sunday School. The annual prize-giving service of the Balfour Presbyterian Sunday School was held on Sunday afternoon, the Rev. Coomer presenting the prizes won during the year. As an indication of the high standard attained by some of the pupils, Jean Denton won the medal presented annually for highest marks in Sunday School work, with 100 per cent. Several other pupils gained high percentages. This reflects great credit on the Sunday School superintendent (Mrs Pringle) and staff. Mr Learmouth, of Auckland, who was headmaster of the local school some twenty years ago, paid a visit to the district last week and called on several old friends. He was accompanied by his wife and son Alex. Mr G. R. Herron has returned from Invercargill where he was officiating as sideshow steward. Miss Margaret Stewart, having completed her course at the Dunedin Training College, is spending her vacation with her parents. Miss Ella Pringle, who has been a pupil of the Otago Girls’ High School, is home for the holidays.
