FIRE ON STEAMER
LOSS OF 250 LIVES PANIC AMONG CHINESE PASSENGERS VESSEL DESTROYED (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Shanghai, December 14. Approximately 250 Chinese passengers on the Chinese inter-island steamer Tatch are believed to have perished early yesterday following an outbreak of fire 60 miles from Shanghai, according to accounts brought by survivors who were rescued by fishing junks. The company officials dispute the passengers’ estimate of the deaths, but the vessel was carrying 600, and half are still missing. Eight survivors have already succumbed to exposure in the icy waters. Panic followed the fire, the cause of which is unknown. The vessel was beached. Hundreds had already jumped into the water to escape the flames. The Tatch was destroyed. The same company’s vessel Tachi was lost in similar circumstances last March, when 600 lost their lives.
