VIOLENT GALE
MEDITERRANEAN SWEPT OVER 40 LIVES REPORTED LOST ITALIAN SHIP FOUNDERS (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) London, December 14. Over 40 lives were lost in the worst storms the Mediterranean has experienced for several years. The Italian naval salvage ship Tesee foundered near Sardinia, 36 persons being drowned. The cruiser Trieste rescued 110, of whom four were injured. Four survivors of the French submarine chaser No. 96, which foundered off Algiers, reached safety after a terrible march across sand dunes and scrub. A fifth died from exhaustion, while a sixth is feared to have been lost in the scrub. Seven more are missing. Many fishing boats are missing, and their crews, it is feared, have been drowned. The gale destroyed houses at Bizerta. Communications are interrupted.
