MATAURA NEWS

EVENING SPORTS.

(From Our Correspondent.)

In the Coronation Hall on Friday evening a meeting was held for the purpose of electing officers for the running of the evening sports about 14 gentlemen attending. Mr John W. Aitken (president) occupied the chair and briefly outlined the business before the meeting. The following officers were selected: Vice-president, Mr N. McLeod; committee, Messrs J. Bolton, H. Heaps, H. Hill, R. Scott, A. Reid, A. Scott, H. Major, H. McKinnon and G. Marriner; judges of running and cycling, Messrs J. W. Aitken, J. Bolton and A. J. Hill; marksmen, Messrs G. Marriner, D. O’Brien, H. Heaps, R. Scott and H. McKinnon; bellman, Mr G. Cruickshanks; handicappers and judges of hop, step and jump, Messrs J. Calder, A. Scott, and H. Major.

Mr H. J. Hill stated that he would give a trophy- for most points in cycling events, whilst Mr W. N. Dunnage offered a sliver medal for the jumping events. Both offers were accepted with thanks.

It was resolved that an aggregate prize be given for the most points in all events at the conclusion of the season.

The matter of a half-day meeting was discussed and it was finally resolved to hold over further consideration until after the New Year.

It was resolved that in the meantime post entries should be made to Mr J. Bolton.

In the scout room on Friday evening the Mataura Troop concluded its weekly parades for the season when the president (Mr A. N. Mac Gibbon) and members of committee attended for the dual purpose of congratulating the troop on the progress and to present the cup for general efficiency, good conduct and deeds. The Fox and Owl Patrols were equal and it has been agreed that the respective patrol leader’s name be engraved thereon in due course.

In making the presentation Mr Mac Gibbon urged the boys to be attentive to their work and congratulated them on what they had accomplished and hoped that those who had received the trophy would strive to do better next year whilst those who had not had success this time were not to be discouraged. Very eulogistic references were made to the good work done by the scoutmaster, Mr John Irwin. Being the last parade he asked the boys to give three hearty cheers for their leader and these were lustily- given. Subsequently the executive entertained the members at supper during which it was announced that in all probability there would be a scout camp during the Christmas and New Year holidays when it was anticipated the local troop would be represented. The meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. The rainfall experienced on Friday night last was very welcome and will do an immense amount of good to pastures and turnip crops.

For the Sunday evening services exchanges of pulpits were made by the two resident ministers, the Rev. D. McNeur preaching at the Church of Christ Sunday School anniversary service and Pastor J. Tyrell-Baxter officiating at the Presbyterian Church.

Mr T. K. Fisher, Town Clerk, left by the through express on Saturday en route to Auckland where he will spend his annual vacation. During his absence Miss E. Kay will act in the municipal offices. Miss Catherine H. Mac Gibbon, B.H.Sc., of the staff of the Palmerston North Technical School, arrived by Saturday evening’s express to spend the Christmas holidays with her parents. Mrs Hugh Mair (formerly of Invercargill) but now of Khandallah, Wellington, is at present visiting Mataura and is the guest of her daughter, Mrs A. N. Mac Gibbon, Kana street.
