HELPING THE NEEDY

DONATIONS IN KIND AND MONEY. DEPOT ARRANGEMENTS FOR NEXT WEEK. In response to the appeal of his Worship the Mayor (Mr John Miller) for special Christmas contributions to assist the Invercargill unemployed, gifts of tea have been received from the following: Messrs Matheson’s, Ltd. (half-chest), Mr J. L. McG. Watson (half-chest) and Mr and Mrs 11. B. Farnall (51bs).

The Mayor’s Fund has in addition been benefited by cash donations of £lO from Mr R. A. Anderson, £1 from Mr Findlay, 10/- from “Anonymous,” 2/6 from “Waituna,” and £3 14/— from the pupils of the Southland Technical College, the lastmentioned donation being quite apart from the regular contributions of the staff. Apart also from these contributions the college has donated 18271bs of goods and £8 4/6 in cash which reflects great credit upon those responsible. The fund has also been swelled by further regular donations totalling £l2 7/4, received from the following: Staffs of the Bristol Piano Company, Regent Theatre, Department of Agriculture, Storrie,. Willett Ltd., New Zealand Milk Products, J. D. Campbell Ltd., Thomson and Beattie Ltd., Bank of Australasia, Southland News, Matheson’s Ltd., Invercargill railway employees, Invercargill dentists, Featherstone, Adamson and Francis, and Brass Bros., Ltd. The following goods have been received at the Relief Depot and are gratefully acknowledged by the committee: Three parcels, and six parcels of groceries from the Boys’ Technical College, one parcel of clothing from Miss Brown, J-ton of coal from "Sympathizer”; 10 parcels of groceries from Mr J. L. McG. Watson and two loaves of bread from “Anonymous.” Mr Kelman, grocer, has returned for cancellation coupons for 28 loaves of bread, requesting that the cost of this bread be taken as a donation.

On Monday and Tuesday of next week, December 21 and 22, the depot in Yarrow street will be open from 9 a.m. till noon and from 1 p.m. till 3 p.m., when goods will be given out to those needing help, irrespective of their week off.
