Howat and Mr W. Mackie, was received at the last meeting of the Otago Acclimatization Society. Mr Howat placed before the society the conditions under which the Pomahaka river is now fished. The anglers of the Tapanui district appreciate the work of the society in stocking the river. Their association had previously asked the society to reserve the Pomahaka river for flyfishing only. The society had not granted this request, and this deputation again requested that the society should stop worm fishing with set rods. He spoke of the prevalence of this practice, and its influence on young fishermen who saw older men using this way, and pointed out the damage done to the stream. In a few years’ time no amount of restocking would be of any avail in this river which was a valuable asset to the province. Mr Mackie endorsed the remarks of Mr Howat. The matter was then discussed by the society, there being considerable difference of opinions. Mr Howat thanked the society for the manner in which the deputation had been received, and said he was confident taat the matter could be safely left in the hands of the society. Tim chairman said the request of the deputation would be brought up for discussion at the annual meeting.
