The items were: Song, Mr D. Russell; violin solo, Mr Guy Corbett; song, Mrs 0. Hubener; vocal duet, Messrs David Russell and A. J. Jones; song, Mrs A. N. Mac Gibbon; dance, Mr W. Welcome rain set in on Friday night and continued throughout Saturday morning. The downfall will do an immense amount of good in reviving pastures and gardens, which had become particularly dry owing to the recent hot spell. The annual cricket match between teams representing the local club and the Mataura Citzens’ Tennis Club was played in perfect weather on the recreation grounds on Thursday and Friday evenings before a large gathering of supporters of both clubs, many of whom had come with the idea that there would be considerable enjoyment to be had from the endeavours of the tennis players who were essaying to handle a cricket bat, many for the first time since school days. The spectators were certainly not disappointed, but with assistance from L. G. Townsend and Dr. Allan the visitors managed to score 129 to which the club responded with 153, the majority of which were made by J. Leitch, who played an excellent innings for a total of 83. Altogether the match was regarded as highly enjoyable and in a measure to avenge their defeat a challenge to a tennis match was promptly issued to the cricketers who have in true sporting spirit accepted it. The weekly meeting of the Unemployment Committee was held on Friday evening, Mr John Buchanan presiding. Information was received that a gentleman had donated eight bags of seed potatoes to the committee and it was resolved that all the unemployed be put on planting them in the sections previously offered to the committee for this purpose. It was resolved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded the donor for his gift. A consignment of bobby veal will lie loaded from the works of the Southland Frozen Meat Co. early in the incoming week for shipment per s.s. Northumberland.
