For riding a motor cycle which did not have an effective silencer attached he was convicteel and fined 10/-, with costa 10/-. He was allowed one month in which to pay. Mary Kubala, for driving a car without being the holder of a driver’s license, was convicted and fined 10/-, with/costs 14/6. Cecil Carr pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving a motor car in a manner dangerous to the public. J. H. Croad, traffic inspector for the Gore Borough, stated that the car had turned from Main street into Medway street at a speed of from 20 to 30 miles an hour. There was a good deal of traffic about at the time and it was fortunate that the crossing was clear. Defendant stated that he did not consider that the speed was a dangerous one. He was convicted and ordered to pay costs 12/6. Michael Casey pleaded guilty to a charge of cruelly ill-treating three horses by working them when they had sore shoulders. Counsel for the society stated that the case was regarded as a serious one. The sores on two of the horses were of long standing, while the condition of the third horse would have been equally bad had defendant continued to work it. The inspector stated that apparently no effort had been made to cleanse the sores. Counsel for the defendant stated that Casey had been a painter until some twelve months ago when he took up farming at Balfour. He had not had very much to do with horses, and was not sufficiently well off to replace the three horses with others. He had consulted a neighbour with regard to the sores and on his recommendation had bathed them With salt water. He had also cut pieces out of the collars in order to prevent irritation. Counsel for the society stated that, according to the inspector nothing had been done to the collars as suggested. The Magistrate stated that the case appeared to be a bad one and apparently the defendant had not even attended to the horses as an inexperienced man would do. Casey was convicted and fined £lO, with costa amounting to £2 14/-.
