The Nobel auxiliary schooner Huia arrived at Auckland on the morning of November 17 from Dunedin. The vessel left Dunedin at 2 p.m. on November 11, and experienced fine weather with light winds, varying from north-west to north-east, on the passage. The Huia left Auckland on Monday for Whangarei to load a timber cargo from Melbourne. After discharge she will take explosives from Melbourne to Fremantle and then return to Melbourne to load explosives for New Zealand. The Government motor ship Maui Pomare left Auckland on Friday for Apia andNiue Island to load fruit for Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is scheduled to leave Auckland on December 23 for Apia and Niue Island to load another cargo of fruit for New Zealand. According to a survey furnished by the Merchant Marine Committee of the United States Congress, approximately 81 per cent, of the cost of an American merchant ship goes for labour—labour in actually building the ship, and the labour of producing and transporting the numerous materials that go into it. The old paddle steamer Lyttelton, representing one of the earliest types of steamer, and the motor ship Aorangi, typifying the modern ocean liner, the other day afforded an unusual shipping contrast at Auckland. The two vessels were berthed opposite each other, the Aorangi alongside the eastern side of Prince’s wharf and the Lyttelton at the western side of Queen’s wharf. Although over 50 years old, the Lyttelton is still in commission towing logs to Auckland. The only other paddle steamer in the gulf is the Kopu, a small wooden vessel at Thames.

An American who arrived in London recently told the story’ of how Mr Cecil Rountree, a West End consulting surgeon performed a serious operation in mid-Atlantic. The American said Air Rountree was travelling to New York on the Bremen with a woman patient who was taken ill in London and on whom he was to operate in New Y'ork. On the voyage the patient grew worse and an immediate operation became necessary. The Bremen is equipped with an excellent operating theatre, and, though the operation was a serious one, it was entirely successful. It was not necessary even to slow down the liner. Air Rountree returned to London after a stay of only one day in New York. TELEGRAPHED REPORTS. COASTAL AND OVERSEAS. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, November 24.
