A BIG SAVING

RETIREMENT OF EDUCATION OFFICERS. (Per United Press Association.J Wellington, November 24. By the retirement of senior officers in the Education Department an annual saving of £13,000 is being effected. The economies made so far in the department are almost entirely of an administrative nature and do not affect the direct teaching of the children. The department in a letter urging education boards to effect all possible economics announces that 23 officers are being dismissed altogether. The retirements include the Assistant Director of Education, Mr A. Bell with a salary of £900; the Assistant Chief Inspector and administrative senior inspector, Mr J. A. Cowles, £715; three staff senior inspectors including Mr J. Robertson. Auckland, £750, and Mr N. A. McKenzie (Taranaki) £715; six staff inspectors with £665 each; supervisor of the school music, Mr E. Tayler, £750; Assisting Controlling' Officer in the buildings branch, Mr J. Davey, £590, and ten other administrative officials, none of these positions being filled, the former Assistant Chief Inspector, Mr N. T. Labourne, now chief inspector, and the former Chief Physical Instructor, Mr H. E. Longworth, acting as instructor only. AH the salaries quoted have been reduced approximately 10 per cent, in accordance with the cut. The saving on these salaries by retirements is officially assessed at £13,000. The economies effected up to the present in the Education Department have been almost entirely on the administrative side. The reduction in the capitation grants, to education boards was purely an administrative cut, while the non-cmployment of probationers and a reduction in the number going into training colleges was effected solely for the reason that no injustice would be done boys and girls who would accept those positions in the honest belief that they were going to receive posts as teachers later on.
