NURSES’ MEMORIAL

FUND GREATLY REDUCED. PLEA FOR PUBLIC SUPPORT. (Per United Press Association.') Dunedin, June 2G. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Nurses’ Memorial Fund which was formed 14 years ago as a memorial to nurses who died in the Great War, was held today. The president (Sir Lindo Ferguson) occupied the chair. The annual report stated that 22 annuitants had benefited during the year to the extent of £1,089 19/-. The amount available had been reduced through the withdrawal of the Government subsidy. The nursing profession had contributed liberally in view of their small means, but subscriptions by the public had amounted only to £5B. The chairman made an appeal for greater public support. There was always the possibility of an increase in the demands on the fund and when the income was distributed among 23 annuitants, they did not receive a great deal. Sir Lindo Ferguson was re-elected president and Mr James Begg (Dunedin) and Dr. W. Young (Wellington) vice-presidents. The retiring members of the committee were re-elected as follows: Mr Justice McGregor (Wellington), Mrs Ethel A. Kidd (Auckland), Mr 0. Nicholson (Auckland), and Miss J. L. Beck (Canterbury). In acknowledging a vote, of thanks, the president said that the only anxiety was that the demands would grow too fast. The public owed a debt to nurses which was not sufficiently realized.
