CHIEF’S NIGHT

ST. ANDREW’S SCOTTISH SOCIETY',

MUSIC AND DANCING. The long period of service Mr J. L. McG. Watson has to his credit as Chief of the Invercargill St. Andrew’s Scottish Society formed the basis of many congratulatory

references last evening on the occasion of Chief's night. Seventeen years have rolled by since Mr Watson first assumed office and during that time he has faithfully attended meetings of the society in which he has evinced so keen an interest. It was for the purpose then of paying a tribute to the popularity of their Chief and also to participate in what promised and proved to be a most enjoyable evening’s entertainment, that members assembled in force in Smith’s Hall last evening.

The Chief presided and in the course of extending a welcome to those present referred to the fact that he was celebrating his seventeenth anniversary. Then followed a much appreciated musical programme, including community singing heartily entered into by all present. In moving a vote of thanks to the Chief and also to those who contributed to the evening’s entertainment, his Worship the Mayor (Mr John Miller) congratulated the Chief upon his fine achievement and said that the Invercargill Society was unique in possessing a leader with such long .service to his credit. The speaker referred to the great pleasure he derived from his associations with those present and said that the large attendance that evening augured well for the future success of the society.

The musical programme submitted was as follows: Selection, Caledonian Pipe Band of Southland; songs, Miss F. McKay; recitation, Mr W. Wood; song, Miss Birss; Highland dance, Miss Birss; songs, quartette (Messrs Kennedy Black, Alan Dunlop, J. McCrostie and B. Clark); song, Mr Kennedy Black. The entertainment was followed by a dance. •
