SPORTING

NOTES BY ROUNDABOUT. Ashbarton races to-morrow. Grand National entries close to-day. Napier Park meeting concludes to-mor-row. Wellington first day weights appear Tuesday. Pegaway is in work again at Te Awamutu. The unlucky pacer Kelp has been turned out for a spell. • L. J. Ellis is reported as “doing very well” in hospital quarters. The first race at Ashburton on Saturday is timed to start at 12.15. > The Metropolitan Trotting Club lost £3,297 on the season’s operations. The Smuggler was given strong threequarter pace work yesterday. He looks well.

Membo was on the track yesterday morning but owing to the frost was not worked until the afternoon.

At Riccarton on Tuesday Irish Chieftain and Chief Light went well while sprinting three furlongs in 37sec.

The trial of Todd Lonzia against time, which was arranged to take place on Wednesday, has been postponed for a week or more.

Southland horses engaged at the Wellington meeting are Paris, Taramoa, . West Dome, Cossack Chief, Palermo, Tunamoe, Apache, Membo, Red Boa, The Smuggler, Ruling Light.

Miss Hastings pulled up lame after galloping at Trentham on Saturday morning and may not be able, to make the. trip to Napier. The tracks were very heavy, and probably she ricked herself.

Chrysology is joining R. Alexander’s stable at Napier Park almost immediately in view of early spring engagements. Monarchy also will be sent in shortly from Okawa. He had rather a bad time with his operation.

Owing to the handicapper being under the impression that Cultivator was a hors*, named Coldwater, as the result of an error in transmission, a handicap of 9.0 in the Oamaru Steeplechase was allotted. Cultiva tor has been handicapped at 10.3.

Two nice yearling colts are at present being exercised on the lead by T. Hobbs at Waimate. ' Both are shapely, well-grown youngsters, one being Australian-bred by Gay Shield —La Panna, and the other by Tea Tray or Paper Money—Bonny Maid. They are the property of Mr G. Littoff.

J. M. McCartin raced a fine-looking filly called . .Sweet Sue (Lord Quex—Shinto Shrine) at the last Waipukurau meeting, which, at the time, was backward, but promised well. Trained at Feilding by -A. Wright, this filly will be a competitor, at Napier and Hastings.

Elude ran a creditable race when he finished fourth in the Novice Handicap at South Canterbury. He jumped out well but lost his place, coming on again with a fast run in the final stages. He has not done much racing but he shows promise of developing into a good horse -next season, being a very big horse, who may require time before he comes to his best.

The Absurd mare, Isa, had her first race since coming to Riccarton when she contested the Seadown Handicap at South Canterbury. She showed plenty of speed but lasted little more than half a mile, states the Christchurch Star. She may do better under light weights in the spring, but lack of stamina will prevent her from taking very high honours.

Mr W. Stevens, of Paki Paki, had the misfortune to lose his mare, Black Flyer. She was sent out to jump the country with Beau Regal, and in endeavouring to jump and keep pace with him, came a crash, breaking her back, and had to be destroyed. She failed to win a race on the flat, but gave every indication of more than paying her way in hack or hunters' steeplechases.

A “cross” is at present defined by the Rules of Racing as occurring unless the horse is two clear lengths of daylight In front —meaning three lengths. An amendment is being sought to reduce the distance to two lengths—a horse’s own length and one other clear length. There is unlikely to be any opposition to the change, as the general interpretation has been in accordance with the amendment.

It is reported from Auckland that Ammon Ra and Bronze Eagle are being allotted plenty of pace work, which tasks are being undertaken in a kindly manner. Both these champion two-year-olds are being prepared for the Australian Jockey Club’s Derby in the spring. At the present stage both have done exceptionally well, and if their future progress is not impeded in any way the Australian public should witness a thrilling duel in the decision of the big classic next season.

Sleipner won his race at South Canterbury in decisive fashion, staying on well under pressure. His preparation so far has consisted chiefly of work of the useful order, a couple of six furlong gallops last week being done without special exertion. He should, as a result, be benefited by Saturday’s race and he may be an improved horse if he is started at Ashburton. Sleipner -has thickened out a lot lately, and he should pay his way in good company next season.

Taragona ran another attractive race when he won the Temuka Hack Handicap at South Canterbury, and he is going to earn money in much stronger company later on. He stays well and it will be no surprise if he is a big winner in good races next season. He may make another appearance at Ashburton on Saturday and if so ho will take a lot of beating. When he beat Punchestown at Ashburton last month, he was in receipt of 151 b. Now the margin is 41b, but there will be plenty of support for the suggestion that Taragona has made improvement to balance the increased weight.—Christchurch Star.

The North Island-owned four-year-old, Impromptu, has joined A. E. Bussell’s stable : and is to be brought south by the New ; Brilghton trainer, states the Christchurch t Star. Impromptu was bred by J. J. Ken- ; nerley and is by Pedro Pronto from Pet- ' rova, the dam of Asset and the two-year-old May Chenault, 'who contested the Sap- ; ling Stakes at the recent Ashburton me'et- ■ ing. Impromptu has done all his racing in ' the North Island, being in R. A. McMillan’s ; stable. He started three times up to March 18 and then commenced a succession of . wins and placed performances. He won • three races of a mile and a half on end, the t first at the Thames meeting and the other

j two at Hawera. At the Taranaki meeting • he won over two miles on the first day, ; while on the second day he was second to ; Lady Author over two miles. Next he won • at Cambridge over a mile and a half, cover- ; ing the distance in 3min 24sec. He was I unplaced over two miles at Te Aroha, but ; got second to June Nordica at the Waikato '■ meeting, going 4min 35sec. He was unt placed in his last two starts, the last one j being on the first day of the just conclud- ■’ ed Auckland meeting. Since early in March, therefor?-..lmpromptu has won five races, • been twice second and three times unplaced ;in ten starts.

• A very gratifying feature of the recent i winter meeting at Ellerslie is the fact that , , the Auckland Racing Club came out on the fright side of the ledger. From the view- ' point of owners the welfare of the club

is an important matter, says the New Zealand Herald, for the prize-money it offers is by far the largest in New Zealand today. Stakes at its meeting this month, although reduced compared with a year ago, totalled £11,300 for twenty-two races, an average of £513. The Wellington Racing Club is offering £7355 in stakes for twentyfour races at its winter meeting next month, an average of £306. Still lower is the prize-money lor the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting in August, amounting to £7OOO for twenty-four races, an average of £291. An illustration of the drawing power of the good prize-money is afforded by the fact that competitors at the recent meeting came from all parts of New Zealand, from Houhora, in North Auckland, to Invercargill. Nearly every province shared in the distribution of spoils. The club has now come to the end of its season as far as race meetings are concerned, and, considering the .prevailing economic conditions, it is able to record a satisfactory year. Wet weather adversely affected the spring meeting, but the summer and autumn meetings were better, while the winter meeting provided a pleasant surprise with its favourable balance.

Ngingo Ngingo, who won the Adams Memorial Handicap at Auckland, put up a great race in the Pioneer Handicap on the first day of the recent Canterbury Park meeting. He made a very slow beginning and lost a lot of ground. Although it was a very fast race, Ngingo Ngingo, despite his bad beginning, finished fourth. The race was won by Dillon Logan, who was handicapped at 4min 35sec and went 4min 23sec. This made Ngingo Ngingo’s effort a particularly brilliant one. On the second day of the meeting he was made favourite for the Ellesmere Handicap, but Belinda scored a runaway victory, beating him easily by eight lengths, after leading the field throughout the race. It looked as though Ngingo Ngingo’s effort on the first day took all the dash out of him. On the first day of the Auckland meeting Ngingo Ngingo started favourite in the Hobson Handicap, but was unplaced. The race must have done him good, as on Monday he beat Peter Pirate, who won on the first day, bv a head. Ngingo Ngingo is by Matchlight from Tracey Princess, a Prince Imperial mare, and he won his first race as a two-year-old at the Cheviot meeting in April,. 1929. He was second favourite to Grand Canyon in the Sapling Stakes, in which he finished third to John Jinks and Real Huon. He won one race as a three-year-old and was three times in a place, finishing third to Purser and Royal Silk in the New Zealand Derby and second to Great Parrish in the Great Northern Derby and second to Royal Silk in the Champion Three-year-old Handicap.—Christchurch Star. GALLOPS AT RICCARTON. TUESDAY’S WORK. Training operations at Riccarton on Tuesday were restricted to short useful gallops on the No. 7 grass track, states the Press. The heavy rain which fell later in the day would be appreciated by trainers, as many have had no little anxiety in keeping their horses in a sound condition through having to work on the hard tracks which have prevailed for an unusually long period. The best gallop of the morning was credited to Ball Dress and Zecbrugge, who reeled off five furlongs in Imin 1 4-ssec. Locksley, who ran a creditable race at Washdyke, after getting away slowly, recorded’lmin 45 l-ssec for a mile. He is engaged in the mile and a-quartcr race at Ashburton. Royal Love was sent over seven furlongs, covering the last six in Imin 16sec and the last three in 37 3-ssec. Arikiwai had a slight advantage from Dunraven at the end of five furlongs run in Imin 2 2-ssec. Taragona and Moorbird strode over six furlongs in Imin 17sec, with the former in front at the finish. Aberfeldy and Sharp Thorn were restricted to a three furlong sprint, taking 3Ssec. The latter has done very little fast work during the past fortnight,' owing to a slight leg injury. Charmeuse and Juniper were companions in a gallop over .five furlongs, taking Imin 3sec, but neither was ridden out over the concluding stages. Both are due to race at Ashburton on Saturday. Whatnot covered five furlongs in Imin 4 3-ssec, and Semper Paratus beat Weatherley over the same ground in Imin ssec. Quantum, a recent arrival from the W'est Coast, ran three furlongs comfortably in 38 2-ssec. Fresh Breeze (I. Tilson) jumped three of the steeplechase fences satisfactorily, and Gold Mint (Tilson) gave a clean display over three hurdles. BIRCHWOOD HUNT. RUNS AT OTAUTAU. (From Our Correspondent.) During the week the Birchwood Hunt are conducting a series of qualifying runs at Otautau, and on Wednesday quite a number of enthusiasts from the various districts were present to enjoy an afternoon’s sport. The local committee had an ideal course prepared through the properties of Mr H. A. Robertson and the Otautau Racing Club, which met with the approval of spectators and riders. The country hunted over consisted of gorse and post and rail fences, and these were successfully negotiated by the horses wishing to qualify for the forthcoming race meeting. During the runs the hounds ran well, displaying keenness and giving plenty of tongue, which appeals to all those who have the hunting enthusiasm at heart. On Wednesday afternoon a jumping competition was held after the two runs, and a trophy donated by Mr E. Matheson was keenly contested, and the judges had great difficulty in separating the placed horses. The weather so far has been ideal for hunting, and on Saturday the last of the series of qualifying runs will be witnessed. Local lady enthusiasts kindly supplied afternoon tea, which was greatly appreciated, and thanks are due to them for their energy and hospitality. On Wednesday, July 22, the hunting season will be brought to a conclusion by holding three flag steeplechases at South Hillend, and the public are assured of an excellent day’s sport. The local committee in that locality are sparing neither time nor energy in order to ensure its success. At the conclusion of the day’s sport the president (Mr H. O. Williams) returned thanks to the owners of horses who had come at considerable expense to qualify their horses, and he also thanked the ladies who had supplied the afternoon tea free of cost to the hunt. The following took part in the runs: Messrs J. Langford (Master) on Ngahue, M. O’Brien (Huntsman) on Silvery, V. Langford (Whip) on Polling Day, A. Matheson on Pantier, C. Low on Driftless, Jas. Morton on Texaco, N. Gately on Nylotis, W. Sheedy on Trooper North and H. Morton on Frivolity. The jumping competition resulted as follows : Polling Day (V. Langford) • 1 Texaco (Master Jas. Morton) 2 Nylotis (Mr Martin O’Brien) 3 There were eight entries, and some good jumping was witnessed. At the conclusion Mr Williams asked Mr Langford to accept the pocket wallet donated by Mr Matheson. WELLINGTON ENTRIES. SATISFACTORY FIGURES. Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club’s Winter Meeting, to be held on July 11, 15 and 18, total 614, the lowest aggregate for the last five years. 'A pleasing feature, however, is that the decrease is not in the main events, but in the hack flat events, which show a decrease of 90 on last year. The Wellington Steeplechase entries are three above last year, and the Winter Hurdles show a similar increase. The hack hurdle events show an increase of 15,

APPERLY’S COMFORTABLE WIN. (Rec. 7.15. p.m.) Sydney, June 25. E. L. Apperly rather easily defeated the New Zealand amateur champion, H. A. Black, in the semi-finals of the State amateur golf championship to-day eight up and seven to play. Apperly, who has shown excellent form in the present series, gave nothing away over the first 18 holes and aided by a couple of stymies had a lead of five up at luncheon. Black made several mistakes on the greens. He was a trifle unfortunate at the fourteenth; for with a win in sight he was stymied, and in a gallant effort to negotiate it with a niblick he knocked his opponent’s ball into the hole. The New Zealander sank a 30ft putt on the twelfth green, but was too often short with his approach putts. ’The result was that he gave Apperly too many opportunities which were naturally not missed. Black was never in the picture in the afternoon. Apperly relied on steady methods and always had the New Zealander on the defensive. In the other semi-final J. Ferrier beat W. R. Dobson two and one.
