YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS.

The following cases were dealt with in the City Police Court yesterday, Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., presiding:— Edgar Dalton, for riding a motor car at night without lights was fined 20/-, costs 10/- and witness’s expenses 10/-. He was also charged with leaving his car standing on a footway and fined 10/-, costs 10/-. John Irving Cook, who pleaded guilty to driving a motor lorry without a license, was ordered to pay costs 12/-. Albert Ernest. Branks, on a charge of failing to keep to the left of the road while driving his motor cycle, was convicted and ordered to pay costs and witness’s expenses totalling 26/-. Grieve, Gray and Co. pleaded guilty to failing to have authorized distinguishing marks on a lorry and were ordered to pay Court costs 10/-. Alfred Wybrow (Mr C. S. Longuet) was proceeded against by the school attendance officer on a charge of not sending his child to school and ordered to pay costs 12/-.

Reginald Andrew Railton wrote pleading guilty to riding a motor cycle without a light and was fined 10/-, costs 12/-.

Charles F. Sycamore, for driving a motor cycle without the proper distinguishing marks attached thereto, was fined 20/- and costs 12/-.

William Alexander Robertson wrote pleading guilty to a breach of his prohibition order and was fined £1 and costs 12/-. A young man, whose name was suppressed by order of the Court, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft from a warehouse. He was represented by Mr S. M. Macalister and was admitted to two years’ probation on the first charge and convicted and discharged on the second. An order for restitution of the stolen goods was made. Thomas Eric Prosser (Mr S. M. Macalister), for failing to give way to a vehicle approaching on his right, was fined 20/-, costs 20/-.

Roland Frost, for failing to have a tail light on his motor cycle, was fined 10/and costs 10/-.

The motor traffic inspector (Mr E. Stopford) proceeded against John George N. O. Hewton (Mr J. Tait) on a charge of carrying on a motor omnibus service and failing to charge the prescribed fare. Mr C. S. Longuet prosecuted on behalf of the inspector and pressed for a penalty in fairness to the omnibus drivers and owners who paid their licenses. - A fine of £2 with costs 13/- and counsel’s fee £1 1/- was imposed. Henry Murch (Mr J. C. Prain) pleaded guilty to one charge and not guilty to another of carrying on a motor omnibus service on the Invercargill-Winton road and undercharging the prescribed fare. After hearing evidence the information was dismissed on the second charge and a fine of £l, costs 13/-, was imposed on the first charge.
