EMPIRE TOURNAMENT. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 12.50 a.m.) Sydney, June 23In the Empire billiards tournament the first match between Hayes (Australia) and Hackett (New Zealand) resulted in an easy victory for Hayes, the final scores being Hayes 2000, including breaks of 40 and 43; Hackett 816, including breaks of 97 and 41. The New Zealander played many clever shots, but was not so, skilled as his opponent in positional control. His 97 included a run of nurseries. The second game between Sid Lee, the British champion, and H. L. Goldsmith, an Australian, is in progress. Scores: Lee 666, including breaks of 130 and 115; Goldsmith 371, including breaks of 50 and 38.
