A young woman in Remuera was struck on the head and left unconscious on the doorstep of her home on Sunday evening while her assailant ransacked the house. She answered a ring at the door and a stranger asked for directions. As she turned he struck her and when she recovered her senses she staggered to the telephone, called a neighbour, and collapsed again. Meantime, her assailant had searched nearly every room, but only a clock was stolen. The young woman's mother at the time was visiting a private hospital where a younger daughter was seriously ill.
