WOODLANDS NOTES
(From Our Correspondent.) Mrs J. W. Muir and Mr C. Wyeth were the winners at cards at Woodlands this week. In last week’s game Miss McKerchar and Mr Wyeth won. At the meeting of the Literary and Debating Club on Tuesday Mr Gordon Reed gave an interesting lecture on “A Trip to New Guinea.” There was a good attendance of members who unanimously voted the evening one of the best this session. Next week a prepared debate will be held. The subject chosen is “That the time is now rife for the abolishment ot trade unionism in New Zealand.” Two fires took place recently, but fortunately neither were attended by any serious loss of property. In the first instance a chimney caught fire and the flying sparks ignited a ne'arby hedge, but the outbreak was quelled early. In the second place a rubbish fire seems to have been the cause. The wind veered and spread the fire to some trees one of which caught and was in serious danger of falling on a barn in which hay was stored. Once again the voluntary fire brigade effected a splendid save..
