Swan, on arrival at Southampton by the Ruahine, said he was glad the New Zealand cricket tour had not fallen through, otherwise Britain might have taken an exaggerated view of the earthquake havoc» The team was strong in batting and fielding, but the bowling was an unknown quantity. As there was no fast bowler of outstanding merit, they must rely on spin bowlers. The team was exceptionally young.
